a) Imagine that an uncle of yours.
who lives in another country has offered you a job there. Write a letter to him politely refusing the offer and giving reasons why you wish to stay in Hong Kong
This c
question asks for à. letter of refusal to an offer of a job in another country, for example Canada. It is specific in that it told you the letter is to an uncle. Being a relative, the format of the letter is based on Personal Letters, & does not require the address of receipient to appear on the letter.
A brief plan of the Letter :could be:-
1. Acknowledge receipt of uncle
's letter containing offer of a job.
2. Convey thanks and regards
from self and family to him and his family.
Explain politely for turning down offer e.g..
1) You've been accepted inte local University & in- tends to complete higher studies before starting to work as this is an. advancing society & you must keep up with up-to- date knowledge.
oz lí) You've to stay & help
your ailing father run his flourishing business. Commerce in H.K. is profitable & life is s fairly comfortable. You can foresee a bright future here.
or 11)/You've been orrered a
job with prospect of rapid advancement in as locally based internatior -al concern & therefore loes not see the need to take up job else-where & contribute to brain drain from. H.K.
Other reasons, so long as they are plausible, are acceptable. But, you must stress on the
reasons why you do not wish to leave the future of H.K
lies in the hands of the young. If all leave, what will H.K. be like in the next two decades
At the end of the letter, repeat your sincere thanks for the offer & convey best wishes. Sign off respectfully and affectionately.
A
There is a lot of noise in H, K. Write about the noises you dislike & how they affect you. Say what you think should be done about them.
Noises I Dislike. This is another specific question. The question of "noise" being a continual daily nuisance is, without doubt, in our mind.
After a general introduction, point out specific examples of noises you personally dislike & stating why. e.g.
1) The pounding of the Filing
at construction sites its vibrations seem to penetrate the entire area and go right through to my nerves,
The rumbling of cars and buses on the road --- it brings to mind the question. of air pollution and how it. affects health. May be that is why you are a puny lad, iii) The blare from loudspeakers
down in the corner shap with outbursts of "pop" music from morn till night --- dis -turb your peace of mind and concentration.
iv) Next door's hanging & clatt-
ering of mahjong tiles al- most every evening --- how can you do your homework or sleep?
Of course ideas differ as to what one considers as nuisance. I'm sure you've thought of some shocking examples of noises that annoy you. But how to solve each and every obstacle? Suggest how it could be done
i) Set a time limit for piling. ii) Enforce strict laws on noise
pollution from cara.
iii) Ban public broadcast of
music from all music shops, milk bars or the like.
iv) Fine all noise makers and
those who disturb peace.
How about your ideas? They may be better.
c) Imagine that you have just been given the choice of a well-paid job or of going to a university to study. Which would you choose? Give your reasons.
A Job or further studies in University?
This indeed is not an easy problem for both have their advant -ages and disadvantages. Firstly you have to tell us what this job is and explain its benefita e.g.
good starting salary, short work-
ing hours, luxurious air-condition -ed office, fringe benefits such as pension, long service leave. annual leave, medical benefits eta and what more, prospects of advant -cement and travelling abroad. What more could a young man want? Are not these conditions tempting?
On the other hand, a course of study in a university means 3 to 5 more years of toil and suffer -ing, cramming, fearing examinat- ion, limited pocket money and freedom. And, after all that, you may fail to pass or can't get a job. Dosen't this sound dismal
Well, it is up to you to convince us which you prefer and shy There are two sides to every story. Look on the bright side of
ne and the dismal side of the ther, then you should be able to come to a solution.
.) Mention some of the difficultie
es facing old people in H.K. and suggest ways in which young people could help.
Here is a depressing social problem for some energetic and public-spirited youth to solve You do agree that senility is not something H.K. people, or anyone else as a matter & fact, looks forward to. With age comes many parblems --- source of income, home, food, enter tainment etc. Have you ever consider how young people could help? Moneywise, you cannot be of any assistance, but, as companionship is fairly import-
ant, how about giving some of your time for the aged? Do the heavy work for them, make their homes clean and bright, an occassional outing or party --- these could mean a lot to lone.. ly old people. How about it?
What do you think a school should aim to do for its pupils apart from preparing them for examinations?
Being a student, what do you think schools should do for you?
Examinations are a necessary. part of life but so are other more important elements,
What we took forward to: is to lead a useful, happy and maybe success-ful life in this world. Schools should help us to prepare ourselves for such conditions. Life is not but days of wine and roses. There are obstacles. To overcome them, knowledge alone is not enough. Patience, understand- ing of human nature, humility, perseverance, love, honesty all these would make a man of you.

PRECIS SECTION
Read the following passage, crefüllt until you feel you have a good understanding of it, and then answer the question set at the end.
There were some very important inventions before we started keeping records - even before we learned to write. Ways of making Fire and cloth, Ways of making pottery, the knife and the wheel a few of them. In this entury, too, there have been a great many inventions more than in any previous period of time. There are three inventions, however, which cinse into use between three and four hundred years 180,and which are generally, Jecognised to have played a key part in the development of modem society by giving men new ideas about space and time and new way of exchanging these ideas. Of these inventions, one appeared more or less simultaneously in Europe and China while of the other two, one originated in China and the other in Europe.
The first of these Inventions was the consequence of two events which look place about die same time: an increased knowledge of the science of optics and the discovery of an improved method of manufacturing glass, These events made possible the invention of spectacles which, if they are to work properly, need lenses of pure glass cut and shaped to scientifically calculated measurements. The first effect of spectacles was to extend the mental life of scholars and thinkers by correcting the defects of eyesight caused by old age. It was no longer necessary for these men to stop reading. in middle age. They could continue to receive ideas, and pass them on, until the age of sixty or more. Their period of mental activity was made longer by perhaps fifteen years and the whole community benefited.
But the effects of this
of this tnvention did not end here. The ascovery thar he lenses of spectacles could make things look bigger led eventually to the levelopment of the microscope, which revealed objects and organisms itherto invisible to the naked eye because of their smallness. Thus, the nicroscope opened to men a whole new world of whose existence they had: een totally ignorant: The early spectacle makers were responsible also for he development of another instrument of great importance. Just as the icroscope revealed things that had been too small to be seen, so the #lescope revealed things that had been too distant: Another new world, the orld of the stars and galaxies, was opened to the human sind:
Some time ister came another great invention which, indidentally enormously increased the limportance of spectacles: the printing press which. used movable type. Before the printing prem, knowledge had been confined to a small class of scholars with access to a limited number of hand-writtma books. Now, almost at one stroke, the situation was changed. Books could be produced cheaply and in large numbers. Knowledge became available to anyone who could read; and because many more minds could now unchange Ideas, both scientific discovery and social change proceeded at an increased pace.
of this period was of a different kind from me. The third key invention other two but it was equally important. Before it came into use men, if they had measured the passage of time at all, had done wes by a number of simple devices. With the invention of the mechanical clock, the could be mered exactly and the activities of the working day planned precisely. Perhaps of greater importarice, however, was the fact that this device showed that it was possible to construct machine for making accurate measurements, and the clock became the model for whole series of instruments which worS essential to the advancement of scientific knowledae.
