Notes on Italian Unification

Unification of Italy

Problems:

The Papal States were not to be attacked.

King of Naples was jealous of Piedmonte

Genoa (a developed industrial, commercial a democratic city). wanted independence.

Austria must be defeated first.

By the Congress of Vienna 1814, Italy was kept as 9 separate states by the Powers. Austria had strong military influence in N. Italy. Sho did not want a strong, united Italy as her neighbour, so she wanted to prevent its unificat- ion.

(A) Failure in 1848-49

The 1848 Revolt in France: (overthrowing Louis Fhilippe setting up the Second Republic) encouraged!

Revolts in individual Ivalian states against their kings & Austria.

Revolts in Austrian States. Revolts in Prussian States.

Reasons for Failure 1848-49 (1) Austria

(a) Efficiency of Austrian army

& general,

(e.g. Defect of Piedmont by Radestky at Custozza July

1848 & Novara March 1849).

(b) The fortress of Quadrilater

al in N. Italy facilitated Austrian Military t tactics.

(c) 1821 Congress of Laiback

allowed Metternich (Austria) to intervene in all European revolts.⠀⠀⠀ E

Support from Prussia Russia because of Holy Alliance 18407

(e) 1848 Vienna revolt in

Austria failed quickly. So more troops could be sent to fight the Italian States.

(2) The Italian rulers were

incapable or unwilling to Lead the Italian Movement. (eg Charles Albert of

Piedmont (1831-49) was too half-hearted because of Royal family link with Austria, & anti-liberal alliance with Austria..

(3) The Pope at first helped but

Texter denounced the war with Atria (April 29, 1848) & Withdrew the Papal troops. This caused the loss of moral support.

The Italians had no outside allies. They wrongly thought. they could succeed by them- selves. (Italia fara da sa) Napoleon III (France) instead of helping, actually put down the Roman Republic.

*Cavour's (Piedmont) diplomacy guided all the events in Italy throughout 1859 & 1860. -Austro-Fiedmontese (+ French)

War 1859: victory.

Lombardy joined Piedmont. 1860 People in Romagna & tre Duchies (Modena, Parma & Tuscany plebiscited to join Piedmont. 1860-61 Garibaldi (Republican) defeated King of Naples & Sicil) He handed the land to Fiedmont. Austro-Prussian War 1866. Ital helped Bismarck to defeat

Franco-Prussian War 1870.

The ellied army defeated the Austrians in the Battles of Solferino & Magenta.

2) Economic & military reforms in Piedmont by Cavour 1852-59. This enabled Piedmont to have a strong army to fight in the Crimean War

3) King Emmanuel II(1849-78) was

an efficient & popular leader. He trusted Cavour (Prime- minister) in all his diplomacy. Garibaldi was an efficient true patriot. He (+1000 red-shirts from Genoa) conquered Sicily & Naples 1860 & handed them to Piedmont. Without this, King of Naples (jealous of Piedmont) would never join Piedmont.

5) Mazzini helped little in 1859-

60. But his teaching esp 1830. Young Italy Movement had creat ed Italian patriotism. Ipading to success.

6) The British fleet off Marsala &

in Strait of Mazzina 1860 frightened the Austrians. This indirectly helped the Italian victory.

7) Less political division among

Italians,

The majority in 1860 were Royalists,

The were fewer Papalists
