Answers to the questions of last Week 1. Ans.

(a) Respiration is a process in which the assimilated food sub- stances or the body sub

are oxidized, with th

of

oxygen, to liberate energy for the various body activities. As a result of this process, carbon dioxide and water are formed as waste products.

For the m

maintenance of life of the body must be supplied with a large amount of different substan- ces, but it is a matter of common observation that the most urgent need is a continual supply of oxygen. Of equal importance is the constant elimination of the waste products, the carbon dioxide and water. Although a muscle → obtains its energy directly from various substances, nevertheless, oxygen is required for the utili- zation of these substances. The body is liberally supplied with reserves.

Of

energy-furnishing materials, such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins. But, as oxygen. is normally readily available, there is no need to provide the body with stores of oxygen, Oxygen without which the above mentioned

reserves would be of no value,. nust be furnished from the environ -ment. As the power of the bod to defend itself against the deleterious effects of carbon 11oxide is exceedingly limited, this waste product must be removed almost as fast as it is formed. Respiration is responsible to carry out the above mentioned processes of the body. Hence, why the respiration is important in the life of a living organism. (b) External respiration is the process in which blood is necess- ary for carrying oxygen from the environment to the body cells and retuming carbon dioxide ot the environment.

In the lungs, pulmonary capillaries are almost in direct contact with air, and the exceed- ingly thin walls of these vessels readily permit the oxygen from the ir to pass into the blood and the carbon dioxide of the blood into: the air. This exchange by which the blood gains oxygen and loses some carbon dioxide.

After the oxygen diffuses into the pulmonary capillares, the oxygen combines with the haemoglo- Din of the blood cells, and is carried to the tissues where the cells constantly use oxygen for the oxidation of food with the production of energy, while carbon dioxide and water are given off as waste products. Therefore, we may onclude that internal respiration involves the oxidation of food within the tissue cells together With the utility of oxygen.

The Thorax

Human lungs are ventilated by hanging the dimensions of the thorax and consequently the pre- ssure within the lungs.

During inspiration, the thorax 18 enlarged by the contraction of the dome-shaped diaphragm and the inter-costal muscles. The diaphra, -gm pushes the abdominal viscera oosteriorly and increase the vo- Lume of the thoracic cavity: the external intercostals raise the sternal ends of the ribs and expand the dorso-ventral diameter of the thorax. When the size of the thorax is increased, intra- pulmonary pressure (the pressure within the lunga) falls, and air passes into the lungs until intra- ulmonary and atmospheric pressur s are the same.

During expiravion, the relaxat 1on of the diaphragm and the ntercostal muscles; while the ontraction of the abdominal uscles thus increase the size f the thorax, in this way, the ntra-pulmonary pressure is raised nd air is driven out of the lungs ntil equilibrium is again reached
