Hong Kong has often described as a cultural wasteland.. And the worst thing about this description is that it is largely true Yet it need not be so. There is a wealth of genuine talent in Hong Kong, backed by a brillicant cultural heritage, that could
well be used to the advantage, that could well be used to the advantage of the community and even beyond. Unfortunately, these. enthusiastic amateurs--painters.. dancers, singers, musicians, actors, sculptorg---can only indulge their talents as hobbies. Those who want to turn their gifts into a livelihood leam First of all that they must go away from Hong Kong. Very few ever return for anything more thar quick visits
While rightly being primarily concerned with providing such necessities as housing, education and employment, the community has largely overlooked the advantages: of cultural activities in creatin a healthy, happy environment. Satisfied with the "status quo or in desperation, most people have turned to the cinema and television as their only outlets. Yet because both depend heavily on commercial appeal, they alm & the lowest common denominator and only rarely risk anything enging or "cultural"

Last week, the passage given
was rather short, containing three
paragraphs. In your precis of
such a passage, paragraphs are usually unnecessary. The paragra- phs of the original are no guide as to how the precis should be divide.
Model answer:- Precis Da. c
In June, 1950, a storm on Excel sent a torrent sweeping wards the Dee-coast, where it flooded the village of Lyne, causing enormous damage to proper ty and considerable loss of life. All of Brain was horrified by the tragedy which seemed to prove that Nature was not as completely tamed as people had thought. Help of all kinds poured in and the work of reconstruction began. (67 w
words
You will notice that the original passage contained a number of examples and dialogue: which had been left out in the Precis. Notice how they had been substituted with either single word or phrase
This week, the exercise is
a narrative nature. It tells a story so your Precis should give the reader a clear idea of what had happened chronologically. I should be the same story as the original. Do not try to be quick and just skim over the passage. Read it until you have a clear idea of the whole story before.. you try to write it. You'r
"may find this difficult, but practice will bring confidence, and with it greatly improved precis,
Precis EX. Write a precis of the following passage in not more than 55 words
One mast was broken off from the deck and lay over the side, entangled in a maze of sail and rigging, and all that ruin, so the vessel rolled and beat, toss and tumble---- which she did with out any pause and with a violence quite inconceivable
beat the side as if it would stave it in. Some efforts were made to cut away this portion of the wreck; for as the ship, which was broadside on, turned towards us in her rolling, I could clearly see her people at work with axes, especially one energectic person with long, curl- ing black hair, conspicuous among the rest. But a great cry, which was heard above the roaring wind and thrashing waves, rose from the shore at this moment. The sea,.. sweeping over the rolling wreck, made a clean bleach, and carried men, bogs, crates, tools, planks, bulworks, heaps of equipment, into. the depth of the seas.
Points:-
(1) Shattered mask and rigging
beat against the side of the ship: (2) Ship wallowed in heavy seas. (3) I could see crew trying to out
the broken mast away
(4) A great cry came from the
shore.
(5) The sea had swept over the
deck.
(6) Everything on the deck was
carried away.
