In the previous issues I have tried to give you a glimpse of what to expect at your composition examination. Very often, when we mark students' work, we find the same errors occurring repeatedly: The reason lies in the fact that very few students are sufficientl conscientious to examine in detai their own corrected written work. Even if they did, there is no guarantee that they will not go on making the same mistakes. May be you are one of the more fortun. ate ones who have no such problem If you are not, may be this may act as a reminder.

THE DONTS IN WRITING A COMPOSIT- FION

11. DON'T try to impress by using

long words whose meaning you are not sure.

2. DON'T use abbreviations in a

composition.e

3. DON'T use slang and colloquial:

ism. It reveals your lack of. both vocabulary and imagination DON'T turn the whole composit- ion into a conversation

(dialogue ),

5. DON'T use stilted style, be

original. fresh lively and ber sonal.

6. DON'T use too many worus such

as I, one, you. person, people and thing..

DONIT repeat the use of any one word too often unless you are trying to produce an intention- al effect.

DONT overuse emphasing and qualifying words such as very, obviously, definitely, only, of course, rather, almost somewhat a little, at least, in fact, probably, it may seem, perhaps actually, comparatively, res- pectively and really.

9. DON'T overuse, I think, in my

opinion' ' or 'going to the next point", for we know a composite ion is supposed to be your own thoughts.

10. DONIT use.gov. and nice"

Replace them with more appro- priate words.

11. DON'T overuse adjectives and

adverbs. Choose carfully to show originality.

12. DON'T hackneyed phrases and

quoatations.

13. DON'T use expressions and

figures of speech too freely; although they add vitality. and expressiveness, too many of them will be like stealing words from others mouth. DON'T use too much poetical prose, alliterations and. tongue twistine phrasas-

phrases, replace them with their English equivilents. DON'T use archaic words and expressions.

composition unless you can handle it without confusine the reader...

As this is my last. issue on the topic of Composition, I would. like to leave: you with a thought. Few of us are born writers, n takes kmow-how, practice and pat ience to make one a good writer. The know-how is not difficult to acquire but what to; write is she problem. One cannot learn what to write in compositions, you must, through reading, learning and more important observation in life, gradually accumulate materials knowledge.
