1. What is meant by pollination is flowers?

Explain briefly the types of pollination.

How does a wind-pollinated flower differ from an insect-pol. Linated flower?

Ans. The tranaférence of poulet from the anther to the stigma is mown i pollination. If this. takes place within the same flower as in the pea or bean, it 18 call- ed self-pollination; if pollen is transferred from the anther af on flower to the stigma of another flower, it is called cross-pollin- ation. Cross-pollination:may be accomplished in various ways, i.e. by insects, wind and animals. Anti -ficial pollination is employed to 1mprove. varieties of flowers of plants, and in which the pollen from a selected flower is tran- eferred to the stigma of another: selected flower by manual operat

The calyx of the flower is made up of five sepals which have point -ed tips and are joined together: at the base.

The androecium of this flower consists of ten stamens enclosed. in the keel. The lower parts of the filaments of nine of the stamens are joined together for two-third of their length ao as to form a tube which has a narrow slit along the top. A single free stamen fills up the slit. The other free ends of the stamens bend upwards at right angles to the keel.

Functions of the various parts of the flower and the results of them after fertilization:-

(1) The sepals (calyx)---- are to protect the flower during the flower bud stage. They wither gradually after fertilization of the flower

(2) The petals (corolla)---- arę the coloured parts of the flower end are able to attract insecte to aid in pollination. At the base of the petals is the presence of the nectary gland which secretes

nectar possessing pleasant smel1 and sweet taste. They also fall off after fertilization.

(3) The androecium (stamens )---- the stamens bear filaments to which the anthers are altached. The anthers produce pollen grains for the next generative species. The stamens disappear after fertil. lization.

(4) The gynoecium (carpels)-- each carpel is made up of

(a) the stigma----with rough top surface which the pollens fall on or adhere to, After fertilization the stigma may remain to become part of the fruit.

(b) the style----is a slender stalk for support of the stigma or for forming a passage for the germinating pollen tube to pass

·through during fertilization, after which it becomes, in some plant, a middle part of the fruit. (c) the ovary----is a swollen bas of the carpel making up one or more chambers in which the ovulea are kept. After fertilization the ovary develope into a fruit.

(d) the ovules----They are small round bodies with life storing in the ovary of the flower. After fertilization they form the seeds.
