In my previous articles, I
nave briefly mentioned the various types of essays. You are all, by now, quite familiar with them. För the next few issues, I shall sug-
some notes to which you may gest like to try and produce an essay.
This week, let us look at a simple descriptive essay.
The store near my home." Notes: Theme:- description of a
store near my home. Introduction:- location of
store, external appear ance, kind of store. Body: Smell of mixed goods;
foodstuff fruits, des- cription of store keeper and faimly, honest, pat- lent keeper; chatty,
wife; two lovable
ren.
Ending: Why I Loved IT. Not all of you may like this type of topics. Usually it is the ones who are sensitive, who make use of all the senses of sight, taste, hearing and feeling that make better descriptive writers. Remember, you must try to appeal and impress your reader with a vavid picture. The use of similes. in this type of essay is useful if 1t is correctly placed. But do not try to fill your paragraphs with too many otherwise it will be like. looking at a patch-work quilt,
One way of increasing your descriptive ability is to take a person, a place or a thing and un- der the headings of our five senses, list the words or phrases that are suitable. Take the key word from this week's topic, then answer the following questions::
What can I see?
hear?
fee?
gmell?
taste?
NOW Dry and follow the plan and write an essay of not less than 400 words in 1 hour.- Remember "Procrastination is a thief of time." Do not postpone the writing of the essay. Do it now! Answers to :-

Ways and means have been
suggested to the candidates, who are readers of this column to
write essays and letters for the: purpose of the Exam. in English in the H.K.C.E. (C). The writer realizes that it is easy to make suggestions, but difficult to have them find expressions. It is fitting and proper to mention, here and now, that it is nossible to deal with many fact- ual, descriptive and narxative topics from an imaginative point of view, if candidates cannot write about these topics from experience. They should under- stand that their aim is to try to produce something interesting and original to read. Provided that they can keep their imagination under control, and not allow their work to become ridiculous, this is often a good way of tackling an essay topic. Here are some examples:
Topic: A visit to a place you do
not like,
