1(a). By reference to the colony of the honey bee explain the meaning of the social life in the animal kingdom..
(b) Describe, with the aid of diagrams, the life-history of the honey bee.
Ans(a) The social life is describ ed as human colony and those of some groups of insects such as honey bees, ants and termites.
In the colony of the honey bee, the queen bee is unable to organize a colony or to survive at all without worker bees. The queen bee appears in an establish ed colony, and flies out of the hive with male bees in chase on the nuptial flight. After that the queen is fertilized and returns t the hive to begin producing eggs. Most of the egge develop into workers, and as in the other so- cieties of some groups of insects. the integrating mechanism assurin that all members will be fed is the appropriate food in the colon; The worker is a builder of honey- comb. In addition the worker re- ceives nectar and pollen grain Brought to the hive or carries lebris and dead bees out of the. live, taking them off some distan
e and dropping them. A certain umber of wax-producing bees guart the entrance of the hive, inspect ng all incomers to be sure that hey are bees of their nolnav.

(a) What is meant by "altema ion of generations!?
(1) Illustrate the life over of a fern by using labelled dia- grams.
Ans
(a) The life cycle of a fem includes two distinct alternating plases or generations. A germinat- ing spore develops into a gameto- phyte(the plant body of sexual generation), which bears sex organi in which gametes are produced. The union of gametes forms a lzygote. A zygote develops into a sporophyte (the plant body of asexual generat -ion), whose characteristic funct- ion is the production of spores, Each spore produced by a sporophyt nay in turn develop into a gameto- phyte. b

When the colony becomes too. large the nurse workers set aside a few eggs to be raised as queens When the eggs pupate, the colony begins to split up. About half number of the workers induce the old queen to leave, and they fly off with the queen to begin a new colony, The other half remains.. When the first new queen emerges, she may also be induced to leave with another group of workers if the colony becomes very large again. Either she or the next new queen, however, remains as the ner resident queen. As soon as one or the other is established the few other queens that may be hatching are destroyed. This process is
ow as swarming.

Egg stage.
The eggs are laid uy queen, and are laid one by one in the cells of the hive where the eggs have been cared very careful- ly. As in hatching, those laid in worker cells, develop into workers. in queen cells they develop into queens, while the unfertilized eggs laid in drone cells become the drones. The eggs of all kinds are hatched within about three days.
Larval stage:
The larval of different types of bees are usually legless. larva in its om cell is fed by
the worker with the appropriate food. The larval stage normally lasts for about one week, during which the larva moults six times and then pupates. Pupal stage:
After about six times of moulting the larva is ready to pupate. Its cell is then capped with wax by the workers. The pupal stage can last for 4 to 5 days, then the wax-capping is broken up and the imago emerges. Adult stage:
The bees of the adult stage are classified into three classes. namely the queen(a fertile female the workers(aterile females), and the drones (sterile males). They are all winged and are capable of flight, but differ in size.
