What were the causes of the Boxer uprising and account for its-failure.
introduction: The turn of the century witnessed China engage in a violent reaction against foreign powers as manifested in the outbreak of the Boxêr catastrophe
II. Causes for outbreak.
A. Growing irritation againa the foreigners. Anti- foreign feeling had always existed in Chin for centuries. Such feeling was liable to break out into violence
upon provocation such as: (i) the changes made by missionaries and christian converts (ii) the seizure of ports
and the lease of land (iii) the granting of rail-
way, mining and other concessions.
(iv) the abuse of
extraterritoriality (v) the defeat in wars,
in particular the Sino-Japanese War in 1895.
(vi) the fear of being partitioned.
Resentment against
foreigners was also rooted in the economic hardship that foreign aggression had caused China.
Such.
hardship was felt by the. masses too. Increased foreign trade and rail- way activities were directly endangering the livelihood of people. To all these difficulties, nature played a part. There was widespread famine (1897-9). caused by the flooding of the Yellow river, which was particu larly serious in Skantung.
