Chinook

Trade Winds and Westerly winds

Chinook

It is a type of warm dry. Fohn Wind experienced along the eastern side of the Rocky Mts in Canada and the U.S.A

It originates from the onsh ore westerly winds blowing towards the Rocky Mt. from the Pacific. After rain has fallen on the wind- ward slope, the dry wind blows down the leeward slope. As air des cands its pressure increasee, thus the wind is warm and dry.

The importance of the wind is that it raises the temperature of the Central Plains of North Americe, melts and dries up the Winter snow and so makes grazing possible throughout the winter. It is thus of major economic impor tance especially in the pastoral regions from Southern Colorado,: USA to as far as the lower. Mackenize River in Canada.

(b) Trade winde and Westerly winds

In equatorial regions where the mid-day sun is never far from the vertical, intense heating occurs throughout the year, causing air to expand and become lighter and so nisė. The warm air then flows late- rally towards the poles at about 30° latitude, air becomes cooled and it begins to decend. The surf- face winds then blowing towards the equator where atmospheric pre Bsure is comparatively lower are the Trade winda, As a result of the earth's rotation, the winde blow from the North-east in northern hemisphere, forming the N.. Trade, and in Southern Hemisphere, the winds come from the south-east, forming the S.E. Trades.

As air descends from the 309 latitude and flows equatorward forming Trade Winds, part of the descending air flowa poleward form-

Again, ing the Westerly Winde. being influenced by the earth's rotation, the Westerly Winds coma from the south-west in Northern Hemisphere the Westerly Winds come from the North-West,

of the branches and large evergreen leaves are at the top of the trees: where light air are available. Can- opies are thus formed, preventing sunlight to reach the forest floor where it is dark and gloomy, There fore there is very little undergrowt except along river banks and edge of the forest. But many of the tall trees are used by climbing plants such as Tattan.

(b) Tropical Monsoon Forest,

The trees in a tropical money soon forest are broad-leaved decidue ous trees and this is influenced by a disinct dry season during which the trees shed their leaves. ¤ climatic conditions are not as fav orable as in the equatorial forest, its tree growth is less dense and

There trees are more widely spaced. are also fewer species and à dense undergrowth is common because light

The can reach the forest floor, undergrowth consists of woody thicketa and shrubs

(c) Tropical Desert

The climate in a tropical " desert is hot and dry throughout the year because it is under the influence of the off-shore trade winds all the year round. Aridity restricts its vegetation to such an extent that a complete plant cover may be absent. Usually vegetation occurs in small j Patches and is controlled by the appearance of water. Each plant may also separated from its neighbours by a considerable distance. In some are as

as there may be no vegetation cova for several seasons.

A desert may receive rain from occasional showers, After raining, short scrubs, flowers and other xerophilous plant bloom. rapidly but will die a few days later as a result of intense evaporation in day time.
