This is the simplest sort or questions that you are likely to pet in your examination because there is only one Choice to be made. If you know your lessons well, you will know that the answer is obviously D. However, if students really don't know which one is the definite answer, then the first thing to do will be the reduction in the mumber of choices, Since it is stated that the convention concerned Britain and China, all the possible answers that are concerned with these 2 countries should be canclled. This leaves you to make a choice between G and D.At least you will have a rough idea that the scrambles were during the last decade of the nineteenth century. Eventually, D should be your only choice though you may not be sure about it.

According to the Handbook of Syllabuses for the 1972 Examination of Hong Kong Certificate of Education (English) Board there will ce 3 sections for the Hist paper,

For details of the 3 sections please refer to Handbook.

Candidates are required to have adequate knowledge

of any two of the three sections. Since most schools tave chosen Sections & and S, I shall be dealing with trem in the issues to come. Here I would like to apologis to those who have chosen Section C In fact, time will not allow me to do three sections simultaneously.

of Paper,

There will be one paper or 24 hours duration, Th will be divided into two parts, each part consist three Sections (A, B, and C as mentioned above.) Part One will consist of questions requiring only short answers. (presumably Multiple Choice Questions) It is compulsory for candidates to answer all question from any two of the sections A, B, and

Part two will consist of essay type questions. 5 questions will be set for each of the three sections and candidates are required to answer only 2 questions. These can be taken either from one or both of the 2 sections chosen for Part one. ie. candidates will used to answer only 2 questions out of 10

However, students should note that no essay-type questions will be set on the period after 1941 and onl an outline study of the period will be required;"

Selection of topics

Most students feel that the Syllabus they need to ocver is too much and would like to know if they can

mit any of the topics. Two yea

years ago, this could have been easily suggested and seconded. However, viewing it nature of questions Candidates are having, it is not at all advisable to leave out any part of the syllabus. uncovered. In order to do the paper well, candidates must be fully armoured in all respects. Many do not favour the type of questions in Part One because what it demands is only historical facts, some may even be very insignificant. It does not encourage a foritical and objective approach to the study of History. But since. the authorities have renovated the old system as this, what students and teachers can do is to try their best suit the requirements,

Doing Miltiple Choice Questions

Most of the students will agree that Multiple choice. Questions are more difficult to tackle than essay questio Often the minuteat details are get in the Choices. In order to do Multiple Choice Questions more efficiently, it should be remembered that this type of questions should be dealt with by a "process of elimination"

Now study the following examples:

Example Two:-

With the confinement of trade to Canton, the Bristish were not satisfied because;

ICanton did not produce tea and silk

II The Cantonese were more hostile to them than the

northerners

III Canton was too remote from the Paki

Ganton was not populous

Government

The entry into Cant on was a difficult Journey.

III, IV and V only

I and IV only

II and V only

III and IV only

III and IV only

This is a more complicated question which nee tudents to be more selective.

Of course, there are different ways of tackling this sort of question. The most desirable approach is by questioning the validity of the five statements. You will find that only statements I, II, and IV are norrect, 90 she answer is naturally E

On the other hand, if students are not too sure bout the trueness of the statements then you will have to adopt a less safe method, Try to point out at least one or two of the statements which you know are definite- ly correct. In this question, you will know that state- ment I falls into this category. By doing this, you have already limited your choices to Brand E. The only difference between them is the incusion of statement. III in E. Read III again. If you think it is correct then you will choose E. This sort of approach is only advisable when you are in a dilemma. You may not be absolutely corrects but at least the chance of success is greater due to the process of elimination,

-

Are you now clear about the technique of tackling

Now study the next example

students must be alert and witty,

You should also study maps since questions basing on related maps are common, too.
