LESSON TWO
In India a snake charmer is a common sight. The snake charmer keeps his snakes in jugs and baskets. To charm the snakes he sits on the floor and plays a kind of flute, The snakes come slowly from their baskets, often moving their heads back and forth in time to the music. The common belief is that the music charms the anakes,
"But the idea that music charms the anakes does not fit in with the Baying, "Deaf as an adder." If snakes are deaf, they cannot hear the music to be charmed by it. Not long ago a scientist. decided to find out whether it was the music which made the snakes dance. The scientist experimented with the kind of snakes which the snake charmers use. Over the eyes of the snakes he put gumed tapes. Then he played a flute. The snakes paid no attention to his music. He beat a tin can near their heads. Still the anakes paid no attention..
· Clearly, it was not the musi which made the snakes come out of their baskets and dance.
