Lecture No. 1
What is Grammar: The quick and easy way of acquiring the correct speech and writing habits
he way we speak or write a language correctly is called Grammar.
In other words, grammar is the science of language. Thus whe we speak of English Grammar, we mean the correct way of speaking or writing the English Language
For
Technically, English Grammar consists of rules handed down through the ages by those speaking the native language of the people or England. Some of these rules have undergone certain changes which have been brought about by changes in ideas, fashions or customs. instance the past participle of "dream" is no longer spelt as "dreamed" but "dreamt" and "spelt" is the modern spelling for "spelled" used in those bygone days. The word "faucet is no longer used in conversation; we use "tap" instead. A place where convicts are sent is spelt as "jail", although the former spelling "gaol" is still used by those who are not used to the modern spelling.... "Convicts" remind us of those days when wrongdoers in Engrand vere given a chance to start a new lift in the newly-discovered Australia Today. "criminals" is more universally used.
Knowing the changes in the rules that govern correct English is one way of learning to improve one's knowledge of the language. Constant use of the correct forms of speech also necessary
Reading a dictionary every day, or study- ing a certain Grammar book regularly, is certainly NOT the correct way of learning a

English sentences fall into certain fixed regular patterns. English words are often s joined into fixed groups. In learning English one should therefore study and practice those patterns and groups of words that one comes across in conversations or in one's reading
Never try to learn the common mistakes in English; use the time to learn good standard phrases. Why waste your time in learning what is vrong, when you can use your time to learn and practise what is correct? There is one great danger in learning common mistakes, and that is, if you happen to be forgetful once, you will be using the mistakes you have learnt whereas if you have not learnt them, it is unlikely that you will be
of them.
-reading and writing are the initial stages called for in learning a language. Whenever you are free you should listen to the radio, or the television. In class try to improve your listening ability; when you have listened you can then try to speak. Do not be afraid to open your mouth and say words that you have never said before.
Listening, speakin, thinking
~MOT could you learn to swim if you don't get yourself into the water; in the same manner how could you learn to: speak if you don't get yourself into the habit of speaking. You may find, to your surprise and perhaps sorrow, tha the sound you hear of your own voice, is not right; but that does not matter. Gradually you will be able to detect your own mistakes. and by avoiding them you are on the road to.. improvement,
The next step is to getting into the reading habit. Read good novels; read regularly. And finally try to practice writing letters and essays. Keeping a diary is another useful way of improving your writing.. ability
Should
The fact that most people in Hong Kong. can speak Cantonese well without going to a school to learn is good proof that if you can have the opportunity to listen to a language. and speak it every day you will be able to understand and use that language well. you be in London for a while, you will be able to speak English well. Hong Kong with its typical Chinese background is not an ideal place to learn English unless you can force yourself to speak English, and thus create an
English atmosphere" among you and your friends.

rencing is not only a sport, but an ar as vert Its complex rules and conventions have been developed since the seventeenth century from a skill for self-defence against attackers to a sport in the Olympic games in recent days.
In Europe fencing has been basically a college and school sport, an adjunct to educational process.
The objectives have been to stimulate the response of the fencer, to activate the mind to function in smooth co-ordination with the body, so that both can be physically sound at all times; to encourage as greatly as possible the development of the rich strategic) potential of the game.
Fencing is truly a contest of generalship as well as of speed, strength, agility and stamina in man pover,
