英中會考歷史科答案
particularly shrewd, Britain knew that Austria also cherishe ed territorial ambitions in the Balkana, and that Austria. was a traditional rival of Russia in the Balkans. Thus Britain joined with Austria to bear upon Russia. They rail forced Russia for a revision of the Treaty of San Stefano, Hence the Congress of Berlin (1878)proved to be a Bri='' tish ustrian success in checking Russian ambitions and influence. This time, Britain defeated Russia and won a bloodless triumph. It was pure diplomatio victory, giv
:::Thus Anglo-Russian contact with regard to eastern. Europe was one of conflict and rivalry. However, this Anglo-Russian ill will was lessened in the first decade of the twentieth century, The two actually approached each other on relatively friendly terms, This was shown in the 1907 Anglo-Russian entente which harmonized the two powers interest in Persia. Afghanistan and Tibet.
Thus the two was drawn together. But a more important
factor was the Eruopean situation. By the later half of, the first decade of the twentieth century, Europe was decisively divided into two hostile war-camps. Britain qad to pick up an alliarice. She had already signed one with France Now it was Russia which allied with Britain.
hus for the meantime, they had to settle their Balkan dife ferences in face:of a more immediate threat Germany. In this way, the Triple Entente was Instrumental in settling Anglo-Russian differences.
B.5. Discuss two of the following, stating their importanos,
a) The Eas Telegram-
The Fan Telegram is generally accepted to be the im strument in bringing France to war with Prussia in 1870. In order to have arer glimpse of the Ems Telegram, one must also have to understand its connection with the so-called Spanish Succession Questions.
When the Spanish throne became vacant in 1868, several candidates were offered the throne. Among them, there was Rrince Leopold of Hoherzollern-Sigmaringeny a member of a. South German branch of the Prussian royal house. However the French Emperor was unwilling to see the prince on the Spanish thrane because this would mean a. Hohenzollern::: threat on France's Pyrenee frontier. When the prince finale Ty accepted: the offer, the French government instructed: Benddetti to demand a withdrawal of the offer from Kaiser Hilliam I. Benedetti yas instructed to secure from the Kaiser a promise that he would at no future time consent to have a member of the Hohenzollern family become a Candidate for the Spanish throne. Hilliam, who was taking a holiday at Ems when Benedetti presented the demand, row fused to give the pledge. When the persistent ambassador Benedetti sought yet another interview, the Kaiser told him that any further negotiations must be carried on wit the king & ministers. There had, however, been atensive in the conduct of either party.
Then the Kaiser sent a telegram to inform Bismarck of the matter. Bismarck on receiving the telegram was bit depressed for it seemed as if the favorable moment for a conflict had passed. However he tried to edit the telegram himself, When he had finished his version," which he hoped would "have the effect of a red rag on the Jallic bull (ie, France)", he sent it to be published in in extra evoring ädition af.the.official paper. The result was exactly what he desired. On the one hand, the telegram gave the German people the impression that the French an Lassador had been insolent. On the other hand, it led the French to believe that their ambassador had been insulted. Indignation flared up in both countries, In Paris, the pupulace as well as. the ministers clamored for var, And on July 19, 1870, France declared war on Prussia,
Of course, when we try to assess the importance of the Ens Telegram to the making of the Franco-Prussian War, we tend to give it a high priority. While this is largely true we must also not forget that the underlying cause of the Wan had been there before. The Eus Telegram merely provided a propitious occasion,
b) The Assassination at Sarajeve.
This is generally accepted to be the Immediate cause, of the First World War. The assassination of the Archduke Ferdinard at Sarajevo started a furious feud between Auss tria and Serbia. The Austrian Government accused the Ser bian government of being an accomplice of the murder. Au- trian even sent an ultimaturn to Serbia, In fact, when one looks more closely at the events, one sees that the as sassination was only of secondary importance. The real. issue was the lang-established Austrian hatred for Serbia, Thẳn vào so; because Serbia posed a threat to the survival of the Austrian ramshackle Empire, Serbia had been presche ng" the doctrine of nato self-determination to the Slavs of the Austrian Empire. Truely, Serbia had been drawing the Slavs of Austria into the Serbian orbit. If the Slave of the Austrian Empire broke, away, so would other subjects of the Empire. Thus Austria was determined to deatroy the Serbian nuisance in case an opportunity arose. The Sarajevo incident provided the chance. By exploiting the incident, Austria hoped to get hid of Serbia ing: localized Austro-Serbian war. However Austria miscalculat- ed and the Serbian feud developed into a world war. n feud developed i
