Sulphur dioxide is prepared by the reduction of not concentrated sulphuric acid with copper turtiings..
2
Sulphur dioxide is very soluble in water and much denser than air. It is therefore collected by displac ing air, upwards. It is a colourless, pungent pas, which turns yellow potassium chromate paper green. As concentrated sulphuric agad. is used for the pres paration, the gas Is dry the residue in the last 1 black owing to side reactions producing cuores sulphide

This shows sulphur dioxide, as an acidic oxide.
Sulphur dioxide combines with incandescence ITA lead dioxide. Lead dioxide, a very strong oxidiary agent, oxidises sulphur dioxide to sulphu) priox 101 whilst it is itself reduced to lead monosine The acidic sulphur trioxide combines immediately with
oasic lead monoxide to form white leap suin

Air Masses And Depressions, Air Masses (7
reponderant
Weather conditions in many parts of the world are depen dent upon the interaction of air masses, and the character of an air mass depend on where it comes the source region, 50 air masses may be classed as polar or "tronicat accora ing to the temperature at their source region; and may be classed as maritime on continental,

Air masses from ocean surface onto continental eros, visa versa will also be transformed by the changes in cheir humidity. It is over the oceans that the interaction between air masses. is most likely co occur and the line at an ION moving air masses converge are known as fronts, when a pola air mass meets a tropical air mass, because of the Lfference. in temperature and humidity, with combination of earth rota- tion there leads to the format zon of a cyclone disturbance a

-IGNEOUS ROCKS
Igneous rocks are the products formed by the cooling or solidification of magma that formed deep within the earth. A distinction is commonly made between those which have crystallized far below the surface and those which solidifier from lavas that were poured out on the surface. Plutons.or
Instrusive rocks, which have cooled slowly unde, a cover per haps several miles thick, are entirely crystallines their com ponent crystals are large. Extrusive or igneous rocks, which have cooled more rapidly at the earth's surface are often entirely glassy or vitreous (without crystals) or partly ory -stalline and party glassy,
Composition of Igneous Rocks
The mineral composition and colour of rocks differ between the acid and basic lava. In basic lava the silm content is less than the iron and magnesia, so the rock formed may contain iron, olivine and carbon, giving a dir colour. These minerals are called ferromagnesian or mafic. But acis, rock contains much lime and alumina and silic. 1 These light-coloured or felsic minerals give the acid lava a whitish colour, Between acid and basic types there are rock of intermediate composition. A
(a) Quartz – is most commonly occur, in perfect erystalist
shows a hexagonal column. It is white, milky or even transparent. It is very resistant to weathering..
b) Felspar - Felspars are silicates present in igneous
(granite and basalt) and in sedimentary rocks (sandstone and shale). The pinkish one called orthoclase and the whitish one is called plagioclase. When decomposed felspars may, form sericite or a clay, In tropical coun-- trica the bydrous silicates of aluminium are removed by rain, leaving the aluminium ore called bauxite. If the clay is rich in iron limonite is forzea.
Micà – Mica is: in sheet form. It is used as insulator to
heat. The black pics is called blotite; the white one is called muscovite. They are easily eroded, but not easily weathered.
d] The ferromagnesian minerals are usually present in small
quantity and consist mainly the heavy, dark and green. ailicate minerals rich in dagnesia "and" iron oxides
a
Dolerite - Dolerite occurs in dykes and sills, and is of great
importance as a road metal because of its toughness, and. its capacity for holding coating of tar and for giving a good "bind. It is dark grey, sometimes nearly black in colour, except when the production of felpar sa hiRE. the texture is usually of medium to fine grala. Minerals: plagioclase and augste.
Pastures The nearer dolerite approaches gabbro, as the
texture increases in coarseness, the less em phatic will be latb-like form of the felspar. On the other hand, dålerite merges by degreg_ into basalt as the texture besusa fizete
Granite
Mineralss Quartz and felspar are the essential mungals.
The latter includes both orthoslase and plagiot clase. Quartz say form 20 to 40 per cent of the rock, and felspar up to 60 per cent. Mics of some kind is commonly present and may be a darkk variey like biotite, or the light mica macovites or both. Other minerals which may be present In different grantes, The large felspar content of the rock is reflected in the high percentages for "sode and potash, though sose of the latter helps to form mica; the low ferromagnesian con- rent. Ls to be noted. The high value for silica sesults in the formation of free quartz after the metallic bases have been fully combined with Pudicaid the rock is therefore oversaturated
