3. (*) (1) Water of crystallisation is defined as the definite:

amount of water which combines with some substances when they crystallise from an aqueous solution. As the water is chemically combined with the rest of the substance, the crystals of these "hydrated salts" appear, perfectly dry, but on gentle heating the wa. of crystallisation can be driven off as steam, and the substance will change to its anhydrous form.

The hardness of water is its soap-precipitating power- It is caused by the presence of soluble calcium and Magnesium salts in the water. These salts react with soap which is sodium stearate to form an insoluble acuum of calcium stearate;

The reaction is as follows: calcium salt + sodium stearate

cale, stearate

4 sodium salt-

No permanent lather will be formed until all the solu calcium salts ahve been removed from the gater by the above reaction,

State the law of multiple proportions and describe. how the truth of this law could be illustrated in the Jaboratory, in a particular case,

The law of multiple proportions, states that, when two elements combine to form more than one compound, the weights of one element that combine with a fixed wei of the other bear simple whole number ratios to one another.

Copper and oxygen form two compounds, the black cupric oxide and the red cuprous oxide, Samples of these two oxides can be used to illustrate the law.

Since the molecular weight of calcium carbonate is 40 + 12 + 48 100 and one gram-molecule of carbon dioxide occupies 22.4 litres at N.T.F., the above “ equation tells us that 100 g of calcium carbonate. yield 22.4 litres, and 10.00 g therefore 22.4/10

2,24 litres of carbon dioxide measured at N.T.P. According to the gas laws 2.24 litres at N.T.P. ares 2,21 × 760 x 293 litres at 20°C and 750 ma pressure,

750 x 273 1,8. 2.44 litres.

Under the given conditions 2.44 litres of carbon diokide are obtained from 10,00 gm of calcium carbonā

If carbon dioxide is passed through red hot carb redox reaction takes place,

+C 260. (Carbon Monoxide) 2

The equation tells us that 1. molecule of ca con dioxide yields 2 molecules of carbon monoxide, According to Avogadro's principle 1 volume of carbon dioxide there fore yields 2 volumes of carbon monoxide measured at the same temperature and pressure. In other words, the -volume in doubledi.

„88 litres of carbon monoxide will be obtained,
