Answers to Exercise 24
I. Un what principles does the system of
insurance work and why is the system important
isver
Insurance is a system naer phioh a croup of people contributes a small amount of money to be accumulated to indemify any kind of their economic lossess due to unpredictable misfortunes This is possible because misfortunes do. not quite probably fall uron every member of the group at the same time. Its primary function is to substitute certainty for r uncertainty since through experience and experiments the possible chance of mis- fortunes can be accurately calculated.
But the working of the whole system or insurance is guided by three
rinciples concerning the insurer and the insured without ich it could not be. suoathly operatad.
First of all there must be an (insurable interest of the property to be inoured. « In other words, the insured « must stend to goin ut least financially if there is no damage and must stand to lose at least financial, if risks real- ly occur. * In case of life insurance,
there must be a financial profit when the insured is alive and a financial losa when the insured is dead.
Secondly in respect of the
smount of indemity, the insured should not expect to gain any profit out of insuranc because it is regulated by ordinance that an insured is only entitled to un amount of compensation not exceeding the actual value of the property insured, but enough to recover his loss.
Finally there should exist honesty between the two parties, the insu rerand the insured, in signing und obser ving their contract. The insurer has to explain clearly all legal terms in the contract to the insured. On the other hand, the insured has to provide the in surer with all relevant details required without reserve and to inform the insurer of any ahanges during the insured period. In short, both parties has to treat each other with good faith.
With the three principles as basis the system of insurance is able to expand to many different spheres, inclu ding personal, property and even nationa, insurance. The wider its related field is, the more important is its valus to society.
▲ sound system of insurance Iros. the whole community, though not completely at least to a great extent, from being disturbed by social problems, «»g, aged. handicapped, injured, unemployed, etc.
which have all the time been too worrying. It provides all the insured a kind af social stability by promising compensation of their possible losses.
In the commercial world, it
encourages investments which have been too stagnant due to fear of possible misfort- unes. Now, insurance wipes cut all fear by providing socurity to the investors who would only be willing to invest their money with protection.
Exporters, too, do feel free to extend their business after having ob- tained security from the insurance corpora- tions should the goods be damaged or lost. naturally or politically on its way of transportation.
Moreover, with the premiums re- received from the insured, insurance cor- porations are able to lend out money to the businese firms or individuals, thus acting somewhat like a bank to meet their urgent financial difficulties.

THE SHAPING OF THE EARTH BY EARTH MOVEMENT (I) Condition of the earthis
thy The difference in temperature between Lithosphere and Barysphere will cause convection current in the Barysphere. As cooler and denser fluid. near Lithosphere sinks down, the hot fluid takes place. Some minerals are radialactive, e.g. uranium, which should give out best inside Barysphere, so the temperature in part of Barysphere will be different from other part. Therefore, movement lathus created, Sone times, the internal movement is slow. But when it is quick, at produces trembling effect which is called Earthquake. If the movement 19 big enough, some part of the crust will be fractured and filled. The movement can produce mountain by. sudden up-1tfe. The surface of the earth is always attacked by wind, cain, water and changed its shape.
11)Kinds of Roveren't
(*). Horizontal movement (Tangential, Orogenic,
Movement acts horizontally along the earth sure face. It can produce stress (against one another) and tension (apart). By extension, the force of one side Is opposite the force of the other side and the earth crus will be broken and cracked. By intension, the forces made towards one paint. When forces act agains one another, the rock strata will fold up to form folds. If the rock is too hard and can't be bent, the part will rise up. It is called tilted block. The period of mountain is called orogeny. Mountain building forces are called orogenetic forces. One thrusts above on to slide below the rest of the rock the line of faditing appeared
Features produced by orogeniczmovements,
(1) Features produced by compression. A
monoclinal fold- force comes from one side. It is a tensional feature in which the etrata are bent.
(ii) insoclinal fold - force comes from both sides. (li)symmetrical fold force comes from both sides.
and the forces are equal. The bendings of the sides of the mountain are similar.
f) Asymmetrical, fold - the force froB unë 2165

overfold the force from one side 19 muen stronger than the other side. Sometimes the cruat is pushed so far over up to form over- fold. One limb is pushed over the other inb. (21) recumbent fold the force from one side ts
much stronger than the other side so that the LLADS lie horizontally, to the strata. (vii)Thrust fold - the force glid to one side than
the forced part is pulled far away from the. original position.
(vili)Fan fold - It is fan-iked Didy. It consists
a lot of small folds.
ints, for and Faulting
(1) Joints - Where little or no actual movements or displacement
of rocks, a local tensional force may produce cracks as j joints. Not all joints are formed by stress within the rocks; some are formed by the drying-out of sediments, and joints in igneous rocks are caused by cooling from the nolten state. (2) Tor A big rock stands lonely on the side of the mountain is a tor. It is because some rocks have been weathered away and left the hard and substantial big rocks as Tor « 3) Faulting - Two faults occur to each other, and the rock
between had slipped down to form rift valley, or some- times the two faults are forced and to explose out to form a rift valley, But sometimes the rock In between cane. not slip down but explose out to form block gountain or borst
FAULTS
(1) Normal Fault - The haNGING wall moves downwards (caused by
tension).
(2) Reverse Fault - The hanging wall moves upwards in relative
to the foothill (caused by compression),
(3) Shear Fault - Two blocks displace horizontally not vertical-
Sly. This usually occurs during earthquakes.
(4) Dip Fault(en echelon). -Faults are parallel to one another
and a group at the same angle,
(b) Vertical Movements (Epeirogenetic or Radial movements)
This kind of movement may cause the land unlift or subside.) Landforms. produced by Vertical Movement

A.
Mountains.
(a) Fold mountains- They have been formed by horizontal
pressure acting on the layers of sedimentary rocks which have accumulated in large depressions on the earth's surface. The lateral pressure causes the rocks to form folds. In this extremely slow process, the sedimentary. rocks will be changed to metamorphic rocks, due to the heat in the interior of the earth, the materials below. the earth's crust are in a semi-solid (liquid) state, where convectional currents can be set up. Where the currents move downwards, lateral pressure is exerted on the land-mass above, causing folds to be formed, They always have joints and faults.
