EXERCISE 14

Study this passage and answer the questions: which follow it.

When people say that spain as a holi- day venue is a poor choice because the country is backward, ruined and uncivi- lised, I am always amused and occasionally annoyed. While these can indeed be: accura tely applied to some areas- and just as easily to parts of France, Italy or the United Kingdom- it does not alter the fact. that Spain is one of the most attractive andrewarding countries in Europe for a. holiday, whether one wants only to laze on the beach, stimulate one's mind, or. both:

Fach time I go there- and this early summer will see my 28th visit- I realize just how true this is. What is more, Spain) remains on the whole one of the cheapest continental countries for a holidays some parts by a very long way. This advan tage is not to be lightly pushed aside in these days of continued restrictions on the amount of money you can spend abroad for a holiday. Its success as: a holiday favourite is borne out by 1 the number.whc go there, which last year reached the 'staggering total of 19,183,973 (no mis-

print it is indeed 19 million). If there is one part of Spain that owes its touris origins and much of its development to the British then it is Costa Brava, with its beautiful stretch of coast which runs from the French border to within 20 miles cor so of Barcelona. Some of its resorts, 'such as Tossa de Mar and Llorst de Mar, may. Leave much to be desired, but therett are several spots which are very attrac tive Of these, I like one in particular The first isRosas, which lies at the nor- thern end of the Costa in the corner Cof a large bay with a backdrop of hills and mountains immediately behind. It used to be a small fishing port: but has become an pleasant, medium-size resort with the fusual; shops, restaurants, cafes, and night

spots, mostly concentrated in the older- part of the town Hotels are found along: the excellent' sandy beach which is just a few minutes walk from the original town and stretches for over 4 miles... The swimming is very pleasant here particularly suitable for children as the beach is sloping gently to the sea So pleasant is the resort that. I would certainly put it high on my list of top family resorts on the Mediterranean coast: Out of the high season it is uncrowded and not at all expensive. Indeed perhaps the: most enjoyable experience one can have is to meet all of a sudden old acquaintances There and to renew the friendship there. are always such pleasant surprises in a foreign country:
