answers to Exercise 8 -

What is Education TV ↑ What develop- ment has been done in Hong Kong in the field of education TV ?

Answer :-AS Education television is

system of bringing education to a person, not necessarily a student, through the medium of television programmes, like news, features, docu- menaries, semi-fictional series, etc. this hus been practised today by many advanced countries in the world. But, in Hong Kong, education televi- sion is restricted to the meaning of screening to students through the two existing television stations 168- sons which are mainly based on the Education Department examination syl- labuses although some of them may include general knowledge.

It is hoped that these ETV pro- grammes in Hong Kong will braak new grounds by providing a more interes- ting method of teaching both for the teachers and to the students: teachers may be given some ideas to improve their classroon teaching by wa ching how model lessons can be con- ducted by educational specialists, while students can easily be sti- mulated in their interest or learning with the most up-to-date visual aids.

arly in February 1968

an Edu- cation Television Unit or the Hong Kong Jducation Department was created with the advice and assistance or the Centre for Educational Television Overseas, London. Since then a pro- duction team of fifteen subject spe- cialists and other administrative and technical staff were recruited; many of them have completed their television training abroad. ( On the other hand a survey has been made of the different schools to provide television teaching syllabuses.

Then, the Government has set aside an initial sum of $3.2 million for the construction of an educational television studio in Lung Cheong Road, in addition to a sum of $4.08 million for installing TV receivers in all schools run or aided by Government, (Frivate schools have to install their own TV sets.)

The programmes, when fully de-

veluill include some twenty les

gons every week on four main subjects, namely English, Chinese, Science and Civics on both primary and secondary levels, but in the beginning Years only primary level will be tried. These lessons will be videotaped first by the ducation Television Unit to be distributed freely to the two tele- vision stations which will allot a suitable regular time for these pro- grammes to be screened.

Notes and... explanations on these programmes will be published in advance so that stu- dents can follow every lesson with greater understanding and instruc- tions will also be given to teachers as a guide to conduct these lessong since TV is only an aid, not to re- place the classroom teachers.

At present, the Education Tele vision Studio is near completion and the apparatus will be finished setting up by June 1971. Classes are being held for training teachers in this new teaching approach. Thus, it is planned that edil- cation television will be able to func- tion in the academic year beginning Sep.. tember, 1971.
