What has the Government done to encour rage agriculture and fishing in Hong Kong ?
Answer:
In Hong Kong, the food-pro- ducers are incapable of providing enough good for the great population. Thus, the Government has been trying much to encou rage agriculture and fishing. Its effort is not without success though the Colony 'is still far from being self-sufficient
in foodstuffs.
Farming-----As only apout eignty square miles of land in Hong Kong are under cultivation, the Government has tried every effort to develop more land by. introducing terraced farming and making. reclamation. Yet, the annual yielding of rice is still too little. So, the Government begine o encourage the::: farmers towards diversification of farming which results in producing more fruits, vegetables and other crops.
There are 1
teams of specialists and advisers stationed in the 30 agri. cultural areas of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department in the Colony to deal with all farming problems and to contact with the farming community.. Rural educational programmes are held every year to enrich the farmers. knowledge of luproved farming when arrangements are made for the adviserj to visit the farmerse field and for the farmere to visit the Government ex perimental farms, Besides, to achievem peat control, the use of insecticides are tested and demonstrated,
Moreover, the agriculture and Fisheries Department administers four different loans, viz, The Vegetable Marketing Organization Loan Fund the World Refugee Year Loan Fund, the JLE. Joseph Trust Fund and the Kadoorie agri- cultural Aid Loan Fund, which are al1 available to needy farmers.
The Vegetable Marketing ur. ganization, under the control of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department. safeguards the interests of the farmera in selling their vegetables.
Animal husbandry-----Animal industry has been greatly improved in recent years by adopting advanced methods of manage- ment through the advisory services of the agriculture and Fisheries Depart ment.
a. herd of exotle breed and a herd of local breed are distributed: to the pig-breeders for breeding stock. Besides, artificial insemination ser- vice. is also provided.
Tuberculin testing and vac- cination are regularly carried out on all dairy animals to prevent widespread animal diseases and investigations are constantly made in the incidence of ani. mal disease in the Veterinary Labora- tory,

increase the supplies of fish and to improve the living standard of the fishermen.
The Agriculture and Fisheries veyartment helps to introduce to the fishermen new fishing methods, to ope- rate mechanization into their junka, and to train them in navigational tech- niques.
