CHAPTER TWO

In direct speech we have the exact words of the speaker:

e.g. I am writing an essay," said Ann.. Indirect Speech

In indirect Speech Reported Speech we may report what the speaker said without quoting hus exact words, we give the same meaning but with different form. Thus, the wrods spoken are incorporated

into the structure of themain sentence eg. Ann said that she was writing an essay

The difference between the two forms is-shown by the tense of the verb, togeltter with changes in the person of the pronouns and possessive nearness" in the direct form. There are also in some Changes in word "order"

GENERAL RULES FOR CHANGING DIRECT SPEECI INTO INDIRECT SPEECH

Changes in Verbs.

(1) Simple Present Tense becomes Simple Past Tense

eg (DIRECT)

write a letter every week. she said.

(INDIRECT)

She said that she wrote a lefter every week.

(i) Present Continuous becomes Past Continue

(DIRECT)

I am reading a book," he sud.

(INDIRECT)

He said that he was reading a book.

•Present Perfect becomes Past Perfect

(DIRECT)

"I have read a book, she said.

(INDIRECT)

She said that she had read a book.

(iv). Simple Past Tense becomes Past Perfect Tense.

Rules For Changing direct contmands and: direct requests im indirect ones

The introducing verb used is not say (with to) but some verb expressing command of requests such as order command ask tell or request according to teh shade of meaning intended.
