Give an account of the work of the Hong] Kong Society for Rehabilitation.

In a community such as Hong Kong where industry flourishes, it is not uncommon to heer of workers engaged in industrial undertakings being injured or kelled while at work. Although legislation has provided wage of protection for our workers, such constant supervision of places of work by Labour Officers "Yon the Labour Department, industrial accidents still happen from time to time.

If his injuries are not so fatal as to cause him to be crippled for life, then an injured worker is handicapped for: a time only. During this period of recovery 1 is necessary to enable him to reguin 19 confidence and his former skill. Help and sympathy are most zecded by him at this time. But who can give him help and sympathy?

It is to fulfil this function, that the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation was formed in the middle of 1959, and to this day, its work has since been regonised as a vital contribution to the stabi and development of our community.

Operating a medical centre at Kwun Tong, the society provides an up-to-date programme of treatment for people injured in factories or at dangerous places. of work such as mining or construction sites.

If a worker, for instance, is injured in his left hand, he is sent to hospital for treatment. But if it is found that his left hand, that is, the palm only, has to be amputated, them he comes out with a handicappad left hand. Naturally he is unable to lead) a normal life again. Now if he goes to the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, he can be rehabilitated, that is to say, he in trained to lead a normal life azain.

What the Socisty does, is first of all, to, girə him physiotherapy, that is, to teach him to use his handicapped left hand again, with an artificial limb fitted to it. It probably takes time and patien ca before any results can be schiavod,

He is at the same time trained in a vocation that puite his present physical fitness, as the days pass, he is gradually introduced to gymnastics, to enable him to regain his physical health, & number of toate is then given to him, to annans his progress. Considering the fact that today more than 100,000 children who ought to be is primary schools but are not because of shortage of vacancies in Government schools, and financial reasons on the part. of the families of these children, it is vitally. significant that there should extet voluntary organization in Hong Kong to help the underprivileged section of our community. One such organization is the Holy Carpent Church."

Situated at Hung Hom in Kowloon, the Holy Carpenter Church operates a school for boys and girls who cannot afford normal schooling because their families ara extremely poor. These boys and girls are taught useful trades, so that when they complete their training they can seek suitable employment right away.

Courses organized for the boys include carpentry, matalwork, refrigeration, engineering and automobile repairs, Courses for the girls are principally sewing and embroidery which have proved to be tremendously Popular.

Running this school for poor children is only one form of services the Holy Carpenter Church iẾ providing the poorer sections of the community. It also runs a nursery whera young children are given chance to grow up with other children. Mothers are taught child care and how young children are to bel taught. Redical treatment is also available through its clinio which also provides medical attention to adults. The clinic mormally looks after 30 patients a day.

Workers whose incones are below $300 a mouth are provided with accommodations at the Holy Carpenter Church's hostel, which today is the "home" of absut 110 Buch workers.

The Holy Carpenter Church alte runs a canteen which provides meals for poor people. A total of 260 workers including thess from the hostel are today: dependent on this cantean for their meals.

Although the Holy Carpenter Church is not presently providing voluntary services to the poor on a big scale, its work is still deserving of praise. If only ethar institutions can learn a leason from the Holy Garpenter Church, many more poor people can be given a chance to load a more kumane life,
