2. Describe the work of bacteria as agents of change,
decay and disease.
Ans.
Bacteria are both pathogenic and non- pathogenic to plants and animals. They are numerous in the atmosphere as well as in the soil particles. However, whether they are harmful or useful depends on the nature of them.
As an agent of change :-
Nitrogenous compounds in the soil are obtuinea by the conversion of ammonia and ammonium compounds into nitrites by the bacterium nitrosomonas and nitrites into nitrates by the bacterium nitrobactor This process is termed nitrification. Those bacteria are classified as nitrogen-fixation and nitrifying bacteria.
As an agent of decay-
There are two types of bacteria, free-living bacteria and bacteria associated with the roots of some green plante (Leguminosae).
་
(i) Free-living bacteria, such as Azotobactor and.
Clostridium, are able to use the nitrogen in air to build up proteins so that they can grow and multiply. When they die their bodie- enrich the soil. So they fill the soil with sufficient nitrogen compounds and ammonia. (ii) Bacteria associated with roots of some gree1.
plants such as Bacillus radicicola. They exit in the nodules of the roots. They and the plants are therefore interde endent so they are of mutual benefit to each other. When the bacteria ḍin their decayed and decomposed
boxes are converted into nitrog.n compounds in the soil and by ploughing enrich the soil.
As an agent of disease :-
Most of the bacteria are pathogenic to some extent. They are harmful because their activity and produced toxins may debilitate the plant and animal tissues. The common disease in plants is club-root while the common animal diseases caused by bacteria and fungi are typhoid fever, cholera dysentery and diphtheria. Questions for this woek

HISTORY (13)
1. Account for the short duration of the Second
Republio in France and the rise of Louis Napoléon Bonar parte to absolute power.
The overthrow of Louis Philippe was brought about by the alliance of the Socialists, the republicans, and other elements who were dissatisfied with the monarchy in Paris. This was an uneasy alliance because these various groups of revolution- aries had different aims. Therefore, after the Second Republic was established, wide differences of opinion began to appear among the ranks of the Provisional government, chiefly between the Socialista and their opponente .
The Socialists under Louis Blang were strong in the new government because they had taken the lead in the Revolution, because they held some the chief porte in the government and because they had the support of the working classes in Paris, With the purpose of converting France into a Socialist Republic, they demanded the institution of vast
a chemes of social reforms as advocated in Louis Blanc's "Organization of Industry". This, however, was a direct challenge to all those people who owned private property, and especially to the wealthy who had industry and commerce in their hands,
By that time, Faris was in a state of devious excitement and the Socialists were terribly aggraesive. Lamartime, the head of the Provisional government, however, was able to maintain control of the situation by promise of employment for all and the establishment of national workshops. A Ministry of labour and Progresa was instituted, and a special committee separated from the government and under Louis Blanc was set up for the study of social reforms. These gains, however, were more apparent than real. In the first place, Lamartine refused to substitute the red flag for the tricolor as emblem of the Republic, which signified that he did not prepare to concert France into a Socialist State. Secondly, the National Workshops were so designed that they bore little resemblance to Louis Blanc's original conception. It seemed that Lamartine planned to present the scheme as an unsound and even absurd idea, with the hope that, it might fail disastrously. Also, the special committee was so isolated from the remainder of the government that those reform decrees drafted by it vere never-put into force.
The first sharp conflict between the Socialiste and their opponents' came in April. In that month, a huge socialist demonstration was organized, demanding the abolition of the capitalist system and the organization of all work on a co-operative basis. The Provisional government under Lamartime replied by summoning the newly-formed. "garde mobile" to suppress the demonstration. after thisf being antagonized, the Socialists became alienated and turned to oppone the middle-class democrats.
However, there was little that the Socialists could do because their position was weakening. Lamartime now had better control of the government as well as the support of the National guard and the "garde mobile". Secondly the National Workshops turned out to be expensive and ulterly unproductive. Thirdly the proposed raise of taxation to meet the expenses of the National Workshops, the menacing character of the increasing number of jobless w rkers in Paris, and the radical socialist proposals of the special
comittee,
all alarmed the propertied class,
and the
employers, who became firmly united, and determined to crush the red spetre. Lastly, the May elections for a constitutent Assembly furthered weakened the position of the Socialists. The elections showed that, with'
the majority of the people being peasant proprietors in the countryside, the influence of the middle-class, was still dominant. Even in Paris, the Socialista were only a minority, although they were influential as engineers of the 1848 Revolution and as aggressive. agitators of the day.
∴ Further fciations between the Socialiate and the
who now had control of the middle-class republicans, Assembly, were witnessed in the following month. On June 21, 1848, the government decided to bring the National Workshops to an end. This aroused the workers to an insurrection on June 23. The Assembly, however, t
was prepared to take strong measures, and General' Cavaignae was empowered to suppress the rioters. Fierce fighting followered, which continued for three daya and ended in the victory of Cavaignae. 19 a result of the "four days", the Gocialists became bitter opponents of the Republic while the propertiea. classes looked for a strong government which could maintain, the order und discipline of the city and which would protect them from the spectre of socialise or commenism.
With the split of the revolutionary forces, the conflicts between the Socialists and the middle-class republicans, and the general wish for order and peace, the ground was prepared for a third party to come into, power -the Bonar partists,
The personality of Napoleon I had dominated the imagination of Frenchmen during his life ting; it continued to dominate their imagination after his death. As the great Napoleon' became more and more a memory, people tended to look at him through rose- *coloured spectacles. To the French, the very name of
Napoleon Symbolised glory, order, and justice. During the reign of Louis Philippe, the #apoleonic Legend" gradually gained ground and enabled Louis Napoleon, nephew of the Great Napoleon, to exploit the situation. to the full,
Louis Napoleon possessed a strong conviction that he was destined to retive his uncle's line in France. Twice, in 1836 and 1840, he attempted to overthrow the July monarchy but failed. He wrote a book entitled "Napoleonic Ideas" which tried to justify the aptions of Napoleon I, propagated his ideas and idealized his aine. To the great majority of the Frenchmen these idaaa seemed to hold a promise of order and progress and national dignity after the disorder and strife of
1848. Thus in December, 1848, Louie Napoleon
Bonarparte was elected Fresident of France.

clearly his ambitions. "The name Napoleon",
proclaimed Louis Napoléon in 1849," stands wivain for order and the welfare of the people; and without for the national dignity."This exactly was also what the Franch people wanted. By such appeals Louis Napoleon was able to win the support of the nation, In the few years that followed, he gradually ́strengthened his position and for the reestablishment of absolutism, He met oppositions, of course, particularly from the republicans. But he was some of the support of the people. So he dissolved the Assembly by a coup d'etat cn December 2, 1851 and appealed to the people to: approve his conduct. As expected, he gained an overwhelming victory in the plebescite and was given Complete power. The Napoleonic Legend had done ite, work; the French people were willing to resign ita Jovereignty into the hands of one, man. A year later; Louis Napolson again made full use of his popularity,
This time he wanted to make himself the smperor of France. In the plebescite held in November, 1852. again he got an overwhelming victory and the Republio was thus transformed into an Empire..
