(i) Conditions or growen?
Sugar-cane is a tropical grass while sugar-beet grows in the cool temperate some For optimum growth, cane. requires a hot wat climate with a rainfall of 60′′ or its equivalent in irrigation and constant high temperature of 759 - 80°F. Beat, on the other hand, grows well where the summer around 65°- 70° and the apisture condition is moderate. For both, toward the end of the growing'season, the weather should be try so as to ensure a high sugar content.
Labour and soil requirements are of paramount importanca to both cane and beet. The successful' cultivation both depends on a reliable supply of cheap labour though the demand is more acute on beat lands, Sugar- cana does best on loany, alightly alkaline. Boils. In many regiona, vast lowlands covered with alluvial or volcanio soils are preferred· for sugar cane. Beet is usually limited to fairly sharply defined areas where Boils are deep, well aerated, free of stones and neither toe olayeyi nor too sandy.

Sugar cane is grown on large planžations which are devoted to the sole production of cane sugar for large scale exports. On the average, 65% of tha`vorld'a sugar production consists of cane sugar and 35% of beet sugar. But up to present, over 90% of sugar that enters international trade comes from sugar plandations, in the tropics which are geared to exports to the temperate lands. Best sugar is produced mainly for domestic comeumption though thers is sons trade between neighbouring countries in Europe.
