INDIRECT QUESTIONS NE

After we have discussed the changing of statements from the Direct Speech to the Indirect Speech, we now consider that of the Questions and Commands.

GENERAL RULES FOR CHANGING DIRECT QUESTIONS INTO THE INDIRECT FORM:

(1) The interrogative form of the direct question is

replaced by the statement form in the indirect' question. So the words 'do, 'does' and 'did! of the direct speech is not used in the indirrest question..

The verb that introduces the indirect question. is asked or some similar verb such as tenquired' Pwondert wanted to know according to the shade, of meaning to be expressed.

(3) The connective joining the indirect question. to

the principal clause is if or whether except: when the direct question had been one beginning. "vith an interrogative such as: who, "what?"
