Compare fiords and ria n.

How does the sea help to modify the coastline? Name a coastal feature caused by sem erosion and "anot her caused by sea deposition,

For each, explain how it has been formed.

Ann.(2) A ria is a funnel-shaped coastal indentation formed by submergence, affecting an area where hills and river valleys meet the coast at right) angles. It decreases in width and depth as it runs inland, The stream which flows into the head is responsible for eroding the original valley.

A fiord is a long narrow arm of the sea formd by the submergence of a deep glacial valley, with steep walls, deep water virtually to its head, numerous rectilinear branches, and a shallow threshold near its mouth. Therafora, a fiord and a ria differ in their. moda of formation, appearance, as well as utilisation, A fiord has been affected by glacial erosion and a ria, by fluvial erosion. A fiord is fringed by steep walls and is shallower at its seaward end than its landward | end whereas a ria has gently sloping sides and it becomes progressively deeper seawards. Consequent to the above, though both provide sheltered harbourage for ships, a ria offers better possibilities for agriculture and port development since its hintarland readily lenda itself to farming communication inland is easier.

(b) The sea modifies the line where land and water meet. Its work is threefold, consisting of erosion, transport and deposition,

It erodes by corrasion, hydraulic forge, and attrition, The water initially attacks lines weakness in the rock face, such as joints and bedding planes, trapa and a

(11) Give the details of the weather in Hong Kong

as shown on the chart;

(111) In which period of the year is this pressure

(b) With the approach of a typhoon towards Hong Kong,

what changes in weather would occur? :

Ans.(a) (1) A tropical cyclone is centred over the sea

to the east of Luzon. A temperate cyclons develops in the Yellow Sea, from which a cold front extends southwestwards across east and south China, and a warm front stretches southeastwards towards southern Kyushu, Pressure is high over the interior part of China, A small high occurs to the immediate north-west of Hong Kong,

As a wave breaker (the swash) sweeps materials obliquely up to the beach, and the backwash draga some of it down again at right angles to the shoreline, there is a net movement of rock waste along the beach. Such a gradual movement. which is known as the longshore drift represent s the work of ses transport. As transporting ceases, deposition sets in, usually in shallow water or at the head of bays where the approaching waves ̈have lost their erosive power.

(11) In Hong Kong, the winds come from the east- south-east at a speed of 5 knots. Baronstri reading is high, nearing 1010 millibars,

The temperature is 270. The weather is fina and no precipitation has been recorded. 111) This pattern is most likely to be found in

late summer, between September and Catcher,

In Hong Kong, the typhoona usually com from the/ | southeast. Before a typhoon arrives, the temperature and humidity are high but the presure drops. The weather at this stage 10- fine but soon the sky becomes beavily OVIPOLIE and rain falls. Winds rush in from the northeast at rapidly increasing speeds. When the typhoon arrives the pressure drops quickly and dense clouds are formed, modo panied by torrential rain.. The winds become very violent and often reach 150 miles per hour, later, if the eye of the typhoon passes our the area, calm

conditions return. Shortly afterwards, usually

in an hour's time, gusty winds, dense clouds. and heavy rain resume control. The winds now blow from the south-west. Gradually, as the typhoon moves further and further away, the wide become weakened and the clouds and ra begin to vanish.

'tombolo is a depositional feature, It is a bar sand or shingle, linking an island with the mainland or connecting two islands. Coastal currents pick up land-derived deposits in the shallow waters of the foreshore and transport then farther along the shore. These wasta will/ then be re-deposited as they reach the deeper, and quieter water. In tim, as more material is added, it will pile up until it become apit The spit grows out from one island, but ultimately stretches across the parrow stretchy of water to the opposite island. A tombole has thus been formed.

A blowhole is an erosional feature at the coast. It is a near vertical cleft linking a sea-osve with the surface inland of the cliff-edge; spray is sometimes thrown out of the hole by compressi
