D Sulphur has a melting point of 115°C. The

superheated steam melts the sulphur, and the compressed air drives the liquid mixture to the surface of the earth. The sulphur is allowed solidify in large wooden settling tanks where the water is run off.

When hydrogen sulphide is burnt in an excess of air (oxygen), the gas is oxidised to sulphur dioxide.

3. D. Sulphur dioxide reduces ferric chloride to chloride, the sulphur dioxide itself being oxidised to sulphuric acid.

502 + 2FeCl3 + 2820 - 2FeCl2 + H2501 + 2HCI

When sulphur dioxide is passed into caustic for a short time, the normal salt is formed

+ 2NaOH - Nap503 + H20:

sodium sulphite

but when it is passed into the alkali; until noj, further reaction occurs, the acid salt. is then obtained in solution.

50+ Na2503

2N H50. sodium bisulphite

Sodium sulphite is a soluble, crystalline compound, and its solution exhibits reducing properties. The action of an acid will cause. the evolution of sulphur dioxide, but no sulphur is formed

Na 2303 + 2HC1 2Noa C1 + SO2 + H20

There is little apparent action, because the lead soon becomes coated with an insoluble layer of lead sulphate which prevents any further action between the metal and the acidi

Zine but not copper dissolves in dilute sulphuric acid. Nitric acid and hot concentrated sulphurie acid will dissolve both metals. "Carbonic acid"- not an acid that is obtained on the bench as it is very unstable and decomposes readily into carbon dioxide and water
