Mix a small quantity of iron filings with some powdered sulphur and heat the mixture in a crucible. When the mixture glas, the two elements combine to form ferrous sulphide, Pulverise the ferrous sulphide, mix with more powdered sulphur and heat the mixture again. This process is repeated until a constant weight is obtained after sulphur is added and the mixture is heated until no further change takes place. This ensures that there is no free ron in the ferrous sulphide, and hence hydrogen will not be present as an impurity when hydrogen sulphide is prepared from it.
