CHEMISTRY (9)
Chlorine may be obtained in the laboratory by hesting a mixture of manganese dioxids and concentrated hydrochloric acid,

The gas so obtained will contain seid vapour and water vapour as an impurity. To obtain chlorine free from these impurities, the gas is passed. through water to get rid of the acid vapour (hydrogen chloride) and then through concentrated sulphuric acid to dry the gas. The pure, dry gas is then collected in gas jars by downward delivery.

Bleaching action of sulphur dioxide (removes oxygen from the coloured substance to form a colourless compound)
The bleaching action of sulphur dioxide is not permanent as in the case of chlorine, for the Oxygen of the air is liable to oxidise the substance back to its original colour. In each case the gas bleaches in the presence of water.
