(a) Wheat farming in Australia (b) Cotton growing in the U.S.A.
A
*Ans.{a}
wheat farming is fustralia's most impor- tant agricultural occupation as some 50% of the total cropped area produces wheat. The principal wheatlands of Australia are situated on the in- terior plains and foothill slopes of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia and in the} inland south-west of Western Australia. Some Wheat 18 also grown on the Darling Downs of Queensland. These areas are predominantly in th temperate southern half of Australia between thi 15" and 25" 18ohyets. The boundaries of the wheat belt are controlled on the inland side of the belt by decreasing rainfall and distance from, markete; on the coastal mide in the east and south-east the area is too wet and too ruggeá, while in the north the marked rainfall maximam is not suitable for wheat cultivation.
Wheat is widely grown in Australia for
the following reasons: Firstly, it is the only important crop which is in demand, overseas that will grow on the relatively dry inland areas of Australia without irrigation. Secondly, the dis- tribution and amount of rainfall, especially in the southern half of Australia, favours the growth j and ripening of the wheat. Thirdly, its flat or undulating topography favours the use of large machines and its moderately fertile soil is suitable for wheat cultivation when assisted by super-phosphate fertilisers. Fourthly, wheat production in Australiane assisted by government achemos to give drought relief, to take farmers
off marginal land and to relate prices.
As the winter temperature to the wheat- landa of Australia never falle below 20
inter wheat is grown. It has either an autumn-winter-sprin or winter-apring, period of growth so that "the winter. and spring rainfall ie of vital importance in the development of the crop. Temperatures of the whess belt are sufficiently mild in winter to permit plany growth throughout, the season. Plenty of warmth and" sunshine in October and, November kid in the forming of, ears and the ripening of the grain. Warm and dry weather in the early summer facilitates harvesting.
The basic farming practice is extensive with the use of machinery such as furrow ploughs. large harrows, seed drills, harvesters, at all stages. These machines are usually tractor-drawa The yield per sorem relatively low, about 14 bushels per acreri

The United States grows over one quarter of the world's cotton. The Cotton Belt of the U.S.A. stretches from western Texas almost to tAC Atlantic coast. The northern boundary is marked by the line beyond which there are less than 200 frost-free days. The western boundary is marked by the 20" 18ohyst. To the south the 10" autumn isohyet marks the limit of cotton oulti- vation as rainfall in excess of this amount in the harvesting season tends to beat down and die. colour the patton. The eastern boundary on the Carolina-Georgia coast te indefinite since the ravages of the ball weevil, but some cotton is grown right to the coast in places, and also on The 18land just off the coast, Thia Sea Island potton is some of the finest in the world. Other cotton growing areas outside the cotton Belt are found in the Salt River district and the Sav Jaoquin Valley of California.
The topography of the Cotton Belt 1s mainly flat or undulating plain consisting of the Mississippi basin in the centre, the prairies to the west and the Atlantic coast plati to the east, The Appalachiane, the Ozarks and th Quachita Highlande are the exception and do not produse any cotton. The soils are generally for tile elluvium or làm, deep and easily cultivater but, because of bad farming practices, have been badly eroded in much of the ootton country. The olimate is of the humid sub-tropical type. Rain- fall varies from between 20 and 50" and the growing seneón ranges from 200 to 260 days. The rainfall is uniform with a spring maximu. The autumn is fairly dry, olear and cool so that picking can be carried out without interruption.
The size of the farme and plantations varies considerably. The largest are along the Mississippi Bottoms where they may be about 1,000 acres, but are often split up and workad › by tenants, Nost of the manual work on the cotton plantations is done by negross. The ma- jority of them work sa labourers on farme owned by white men but many now own or rent farms. In Texas, which is the leading state in cotton production, the plantations are often large_and highly mechaniar
In late winter the land is preparad} for the cotton in the spring, Drills are then used to ROW the cotton seed from the middle of February to the end of April. During the growing season the cotton has to be cultivatąd from six Losnine times to break up the soil and the planti sprayed to kill the boll' weevil and other insects. The blossoms appear in June and in six

Most of the cotton is picked by hand but efficient picking machines are becoming quite common ipv the Texas arsus.
