Ans. (a)
'In tropical grasslands, trees are quite common and the grass tends to grow in isolated, tufts rather than as a continuous cover. In fact, these are more suitably described ha grams woodlands. In the wet season, grapes 3 reach a height of twelve feet or more, The grasses are coarse, parched and brown in the drought but, with the onset of the rainy sea- son, the grasslands rapidly assume the typica green colour, Trees are usually unbrella- shaped and they survive the long dry season - by storing water in their swollen trunks, Tropical grasslands pasa equatorwards, with increasing rainfall, into dry or scrub forest, and polewards, with a longer season of drought, into, steppe and semi-desert."
Tropical grasslands are”located"mainly in ▼the conèinental regions of tropical lati- tudes, where the rains are concentrated in the. four or five months or the summer season. Rain=Į fall is of a convectional type, ranging from 10* in the desert margin to 60" in are AB nearest to the equator. Winters are dry for this is the season of the Trade winds. The summers are very hot (90°F) and the winters are hot as well (70°F). Grasses are shallow- rooted planta and must receive frequent show during the growing season. They have a rest period in their growth during which the pre- vailing climatic conditions are of no great importance: they simply wither and die down at the surface until the return of more humi conditions. These conditions are fulfilled d
to region. (
(b) The trees in a deciduous tempomate? forest are, almost completely bare of leaves in winter. The trees "shed their leaves to re- duae transpiration to a minimum in winter. Temperate deciduous forestsƐare (cated in temperate latitude, and on the mar “gina of the two great northern land masses.
The winters here are sufficiently cold (about (0°F) to impose a seasonal rest in tree growt! vakast åte sünner varuth ( 60°7 = 7587) E gures the development of fresh leaves,

cases, very long tap roots, in general, the trees are widely spaced and show but moderate
vertical development. This is better called a woodland than a ferest. Grass is very restricted since it has only short rect a which are unable to draw upon deep water supplies.
This occurs chiefly on the western sides' of land masses in the warm temperata latitudes. The sunners are hot (70°F) and the winters are warm (50°F). Rainfall comes mainly in the win ter months and varies from 30" on the poleward wide to 10a on the desert side. With all the monthly mean temperatures above the critical temperature, there is no winter pause in plant growth though a pause implant growth in summer caused by the drought is inevitable.” (4) The tundra vegetation consista of ( grassy plante, such as sedges, but mosses and lichens are very, common. Plowering shrubs may flourish on the well-vatered sunny slopes in summer. Dwarf plante, including small trees of willow and biroh, may succeed along rivera and on vell-drained soils.
This type of vegétation is confined te 'the Northern Hemisphezė, fringing the Arotio / Ocean in the continents of Burasia and North America. Here, the summers are short and cool (50°F), and the winters are very cold (0°F } and very long. The rainfall is light and lasa than 10 inches annually. Given such a short growing sesam, the vegetation_is scanty and lov

fropical cyclones develop in the belt of Trade Winds and move in a general westerly direction and they have very low pressure at the centre. As the air rises, it is cooled, water vapour condenses and eventually rain falls, usually in the form of sudden heavy shower or thunderstorms. This is known aa convection rain which is common in low latitudes especially during summer.

which re
verse their directions between seasons. They are cuased by the unequal heating of the land and the sea. In sumper the land gets heated gore rapidly than the sea and hence air pressure As lower over the "interiör of large continents then the sea. Air bløvs from sea to land as summer monsoons. These are wet on-shore winda. In winter, the land cools more quickly than the sea with the result that the interior becomes very cold forming a high pressure centre over the region whereas atmospheric pressure is lower out at the sea. The reverse process sets in and the winter monsoons are therefore dry and off shore. Monsooną are actually land and sea breezes on a large scale.

(d) mountain ranges have to sides: the wind ward alope which face the cngoming winds and the laevard slope, on its opposite. Where the prevailing winds are on-shore and moist, md forced to ascend the windward slope, they are likely to deposit heavy relief rain on this side of the mountain as they are chillea during the ascent. By the time the winds have crossed over the mountains and descended upon) the leeward side, they have been deprived of their moisture already and, inaddition, have been warmed up. So, this sheltered part is usually very dry and termed to be the rain shadow.
