39. Describe and account for the movement of surface,

water of the Pacific Ocean.

There is a series of horizontal movements of water across the surface of the Pacific Ocean. The circulation of the main Pacific.

currents between the equatorial and the temperatapgions

is clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anti-clockortare in the southern hemisphere. These two circulations approach one another in

quatorial latitudes, so that westward-flowing currenta are found immediately north and south of

eastward-flowing counter current. The two westward currents, the North and South Equatorial Currents are induced by the surfed drag of the trade winds of each hemisphere. The oroduce a piling up of water on the western side of the oceans and some of this returns to make good the loss of surface water from the eastern side, thus giving rise to the Equatorial Counter Current.

the

In the North raclic Ucean, near Philippine Islands the North Equatorial Current is partially deflected southwards and enters the Counter Equatorial Current, but the major part turns north wyd protbeds as the Kuro Siwo,- a warm current, past the

islands of Japan and then eastwards as s drift which is, howevery less extensive than that in the North Atlantic Ocean. This hest wind rift sets southwards in a series of off-shoots, the most easterly of which is in the neighbourhood of the Hawaiian Islands, Another surface stream originates to the south and east of the Aleutian Islands, this water comes south and swinga east, and then bifurcates into the northward-flowing warm Alaska Current, and the southward-flowing California Current which is relatively cool, There are cold southward flowing currents off Kamchatka in the north-west of the Pacific.

South of the Equator, the South Equatorial Lucrent is diverted south and forms the warm

outhward-flowing East Australian Current, the waters of which in part enter the circumpolar West Wind Drift. The configuration of the coasts of southern Chile creates a deflection some of the west lad drift that moves north as the cold Peru Current. This markedly cald Peru Current also receives water of Antarctic origin moving northwarda

(a) Exceptional high tides usually occur on the

Ansa Tides are periodic rise and fall of the level

the seas and oceans. The major causes of this phenomenon are said to be the gravitational attraction of the moon, and to a lesser extent that of the sun which is farther away.

Sun

An eclipse of the sun is caused by the internosition of the moon when it is in line. between the sun and the earth; an eclipse of the moon is caused by the interposition of the earth hen it is in line between the sun and the moon.

ither da te, the moon, sun and earth are atly in the same straight line, either in

Junction (new moon) or opposition (full moon), so that the gravitational effects are complementary the combined pull of the sun and moon results in very high tides and equally low tides. The amplitude is exceptionally great. These are called apring tides.

This figure 8' circulation 01 Lne oceanic waters is due to a combination of causes) (a) Difference in density due to variations in

temperature or salinity:

Currents caused by allierence in temperature are known as convection currents, ware water of the equatorial regions flows towards the polar regions, where it is cooled, sinks, and returns along the ocean bed, as a botton current, towards the equator; it then rises to the surface again.

Salt water sinks below fresh water with the result that minor bifurcations of surface water enter the partially enclosed seas from the large oceans with a compensating bottom creep of salt water in the reverse direction.

The Trades and westerlies carry the waters with them along the regular patha they tread, so that in high latitudes; the currenta move north-eastwards, while in the equatorial latitudes, they move westwards. (c) The rotation of the earth on its axis: This

03 uses some deflection of the currents in

the same way as it affects the deflection of the planetary winds.

(d) The shape of the land masses. Topographic

configuration prevents the through-paasage

of almost all of the regular streams of aurface cceanic. water except that of the circumpolar west wind Drift in the Southern Hemisphere. The currents are deflected north and south, by the continente à margins.

(b) The salinity of sea water depends mainly on the amount of fresh water added by rivers and rainfall and the rate of evaporation.

The Mediterranean Sea has a very high salinity (40%). It is partially enclosed, and its watere do not circulate freely with those of the open ocean. It is in a region of rapid svaporation and there are relatively few rivera to add a supply of fresh water. The one really large river, the Nile, adds less and less water, year by year because of the increasing demanda for irrigation purposes.

The Baltic Sea contrasts strongly with the ' Mediterranean. Though it is nearly enclosed too, it is in a cooler region with a low rate of evaporation. Some large rivers, namely, the Oder, the Vistula, empty into the Baltic, and numerous streams flow from the snow-capped mountains of Scandinavia, bringing a constant aupply of fresh water. As a result, the salinity fells below 326.
