Answer to the exercise of last week:
1. Describe with the aid of a diagram the external
features of a frog. What mentioned features of a frog do you consider as the adaptation of the frog to its environment?
Ans
The body of a frog can be divided into three distinct regions: the head, the trunk and the limbs. A neck region is not evident and the tail is lost during embryonic development.
The head 13 broad and flattened. A large mouth is located at the anterior and of the head and a pair of external nostrils is dorsal to the front of the mouth. The large and protruding eyes are protected by eyelids. The upper eyelid is a simple skin fold; the lower one is a translucent membrane. When the eyeball is retracted into the eye socket, the lower lid spreads over its surface, A round eardrum, or tympanic membrane, lies posterior to each eye.
The trunk of a frog is short and compact, The skin is dark green or dark brown and slimy without scales.
The fore-limos are quen shorter than the hind-limbs. Each fore-limb consists of three parts, the upper arm, fore arm, and the hand respectively. The hand has only four digits for the thumb ia missing. The hind-limb consists of four parts, namely the thigh, shank, ankle and foot. The foot has five toes, and the toes are connected with each. other by a membranous wed.
A cloacal aperture is located at the posterior end of the trunk. Through this opaning the faeces, urine and reproductive products are discharged.

The following important`faatures or a frog are usually considered as the adaptation of the frog to its environment:-
(a) The colourful, smooth, slimy and moist skin
serves for protection, sensory reception and for gases exchange between the animal and its environment.
(b) The large mouth enables the frog to swallow a
large prey as a whole.
(a) The broad and wide head connected with a
stream-lined body for easy movement in water. (d) The powerful and large hind-limbs are adapted
for leaping, swimming and for escaping from its enemies.

The short and strong fore-limbs hold up the body when the frog rests on land
(f) The membranous webs present in the feet for
easy swim in water.
(g) The cloacal aperture provides a passage for
the wastes and reproductive matters (eggs or sperms) to pass through.
2. Outline the changes that occur during the develop-
ment of a newly hatched tadpole into a frog. Indicate how (1) feeding, (ii) breathing, is accomplished at each stage.

The changes from a newly matched tadpole to a frog are summarized as follows:
The larval stage tadpole
(a) About two weeks time after fertilization, the
embryo wriggles out of its jelly capsule and
hatches into a free-swimming, larva, the tadpole. Nasal cavities, inger-like external gills, mouth. and cloacal spring soon force The intestine is straight at first, and then called a race

external gills are gradually absorbed and replaced by four internal gills that develop within the gill slits. Two small projections appear at the either side of the base of the tail which will gradually develop into the two hind-limbs. The two fore-limbs develop almost at the same time.
(c) When the tadpole is about two months old. The

A tympanic membrane and eyelids appear, and even the shape of the lens changes to provide for good vision in air, which has a different refractive index. Finally gonads develop and differentiate into testes or ovaries
