of an organic acid such as oxalic acid,
A mixture of oxalic acid, and concentrated sulphuric acid heated in a flask Fitted with a thistla funnel and a delivery tube. The concentrated Sulphuric acid removes the elements of : water from the oxalic acid thus generating a ulitură consisting of equel volumes of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is removed by passing the sixture of the two gaasa through & strong solution of caustic potash. The gas free of carbon dioxide, is then collected over måter.
The gaseous mixture obtained with also contain mar Amounts of carbon dioxide and the inert gases as impurities, (4) If sulphur vapour le passad through red-hot charcoal, carbon

carbon disulphide 2.3:Water gas is a mixture consisting of approximately equal volumes
of carbon monoxide and hydrogen
It Is prepared commercially by the action of steam on white- hot coke. Air is passed over red-hot coke and the temperature of the coke rises until it is hot enough to react with stean.. Producer gas is obtained during this process. A blast of steam is then blown over the white-hot coke, and water gas is obtained. Che process fa contained for about three minutes when the temperature of the coke becomes too cold to allow the reaction to proceed. The steam blast is then turned off and a blast of air le passed over the coke unt11 the coke is once again hot enough to react with atean. The two processes are carefully controlled so that no heat is needed to heat the cake at any tine,
