In Indo-China, the population 18 largely rural, and is concentrated in areas which are suitable for ! cultivation especially rice cultivation. As a re- suit, 80% of the population live on 13% of the land This uneven distribution is largely controlled by relief, climate soil fertility and accessibility..

The densely netede populated areas are the plains river valleys and deltas. These include the Red River Basin, the: Tonle Sup Lowland and Mekong delta and the, Annam coastal lands. These Lowland "areas are also the chief rice-growing areas of Indo-

China. The Red River delta is one of the earth'ës. more densely populated regions. Settlement consists primarily of compact villages surrounded by a con- tinuous mosaic of paddy fields. In these Lowland dreas, apart from the heavy and uniform rainfall, there is adequate supply of water from rivers and streams. In the north, rivers are diked and flow ir channels elevated well above the delta floor Irrigation is partially controlled and water is lifted from the distributaries into the fields. In the south, drainage is assiated by. system of Large . canale cut through the deltaic alluvium. as these. areas are largely: covered by freshìy deposited alluvium relatively high in humus and plant nutrients,
