narrow tubule called the Uriniferous tubule. It is con- voluted at its beginning, then runs straight down into, the Medullary layer where dt loops back and runs straight back into the Cortex where it forms the second, convolution before entering the Colleoting tube.

THE EXCRETORY MECHANIƏN OF KIDNEY: The Renal Artery enters the addney and gtvee off branches, most of which go to the Bowman's Capsules in the Cortex. The branches of renal artery break off irito capillaries which in turn divide into still smaller capillaries which then enter the Bowman's Capsules forming a knotty mass called flofetulus

Since the blood from the artery has to pass through the

apillaries having a much smaller bore, it is under pressure, The Liquid ortion containing mineral salts, glucose, urea & uric acid, water oozes out through the pores in the capillary walls and is absoybed into the Bowman's Capsule. The R.d.Cs., Proteinew.B.C.s Fibrinogen etc. remain in the capillary in the plasma. The filtereo portdon then goes down the nurrow tubule called the Uriniferous Tubule. At the first coiled portion, which is surrounded with a network of capillaries leaving the Bowman's Capsule, most of the glucose, sodium chloride, water are absorbed back into the blood, The .... second colled portion is also surrounded with a network of capillaries and any remaining glucose is reabsorbed here. Excess of water, mineral salts are not reabsorbed. Therefore the solution wiich:entera: the Collecting Tube: contains Uree, Uric acid, excess of water, mineral: salta etc. and is called UKINE.

The kidney, besides acting as a filter for removing the waste products, also acts as a regulator for keeping the dilution of blood constant by removing excess of water from it.

The capillaries from the Malpighian Body and the Urini- ferous Tubules unite to form the Renal Vein which then leaves the kidney. It should be noted that since the kidney is doing work therefore it uses up some glucose and oxygen from the blood. Consequently the blood in

the Renal Vein contains more CO2 and less Oxygen & Glucose. than the blood entering in the Renal Artery.
