2.1.Give the Structure of Lungs (Manima1)

Lungs are a pair of spongy, thin walled elastic sacs lying in the Thorax, From each lung runs out a tube called BRONCHUS. The 2 Bronchi join to form the TRACHEA or wind-pipe which runs up and opens in the PHARYNX in the mouth cavity. The Trachea is streng- thened-by the incomplete rings of cartilage (the in- complete aide lying on the side of the gullet so that entry of food down the gullet is facilitated) so that the tube may not collapse when not under pressure. At the upper and of the trachea is a box-like structure the LARYNX or voice-box made up of a shield-shaped cartilage the THYROID, the ring-shaped CRICOID and the small pair of ARYTENOIDS lying on the dorsal side, Stretched between the Thyroid and the Arytenoids are the vocal cords which produce sound when air is forced through them.

Each Bronchus divides into analler branches in- side the lung the BRONCHIOIES which further divide into still smaller branches which ramlfy the Jung: called the AIR DUCTS. The air ducts form a sacculated structure (swollen) called AIR SAC the walls.of which of which are again sacculated, each of which is called ALVEOLUS (alveoli). The walls of the Air-sacs and Alveold are very thin fong-celled). Around the alveoli is a net-work of capillaries carrying impure or de- oxygenated blood from the Pulmonary Artery. It is here that the exchange of games takes place and the blood becomes oxygenated. In man it has been estimated that af all the alveogli were to spread out open they would -cover an area of about 1,000 sq.ft.

Each lung is protected by a covering of a thi membrane called thePIEUHAT MEMBRANE which fits over the lung, doubles back and lines the inside wall the thorax and the diaphragm thus forming a sort of saq called the PLEURAL SAC. Between the walls is some liquid called the _PLEURAL FLUID which keeps the walls lubricated to eliminate any friction during contact during repiration, Thus each lung lies safely in a Pleural Sac. ( The inflamation or swelling of the Pleurae gives rise to a disease called PIEURISY)

The thorax is air-tight being closed in. from the top and sides by the intercostal muscles and ribs and by the diaphragm from below. This forms an air-tight suction pump called radiatore Buction-pump.

After having studied the structure of the lunge the process of INSPIRATION AND EXPIRATION can be atudied.

EXPIRATION (breathing out

INSPIRATION: This is the process by which air is breathed into the lungs. When the INTERCOSTAL MUSCLES contract the ribs are pulled upwards and due to their structure move outwards thus increasing the volume of the Thoraxic cavity. (In rabbit, the movement is said to be downwards and forwards).

When the radial muscles of the diaphragm contract it becomes less concave thus pressing the liver and stomach (nestled close under it) downwards. This also increases the volume of the thoraxic cavity. When the volume of thoraxic cavity increases: the Pressure inside decreases i.e. becomes less than the Atmospheric Prea- sure outside. This results in the air from the outside rushing into the lungs which expand filling up the newly-created volume thus equalising the Pressure. This process is known as Inspiration or breathing in. EXPIRATION: This is the process by which air and Carbon Dioxide is explelled out of the lungs.

When the INTERCOSTAL MUSCLES relax, the ribs move lownwards due to their own weight and inwards due to their structure, thus decreasing the volume of the thoraxis cavity. (In rabbit the movement is said to be

upwards and backwards).

When the radial muscles of the diaphragm relax 10 becomes more loose and increase in area, The liver and stomach which were under pressure push the diaphragm up making it more concave thus decreasing the volume of the thoraxic cavity.

When the volume of the theraxio cavity decreases the Pressure inside increases i, e. becomes more than the Atmospheric Pressure outside. This results in the Carbon Dioxide and air being expelled: out of the Lungs to the outside. The lungs regain their original size due to the elasticity of their walls.

This process is known as Expiration or breathing
