STRUCTURE OF BLOOD: If a drop of blood is examined under. the microscope the following structures will be seen. (1)R.B.Cs.(RED BLOOD CORPUSCLES), these are minute, bi-

concave cells having no nucleus (hence the bi-concavi - ty). A red blood cell has an outer elastic wall and an inner spongy prytoplasm containing haemoglobin (red pigment) which as a loose iron compound. The haenglo- bin has a great affinity (attraction) for OXYGEN and readily combines with it to form oxy-haemoglobin which, if in a region of low concentration of oxygen, decome poses and releases oxygen. This is the chief agency which transporta oxygen from the lungs to the cells of the tissues during respiration.

The R.B.Cs are made in the short bones and nave a life-span of about 31⁄2 - 4 months. About 1% are re- placed each day. The R.B.Ca. break down in the liver wand spleen. In the liver they form a part of bile ve

the colouring matter.

(ii)W.B.Cs. (WHITE BLOOD CUKPUSCLES); these are white in colour, as the name suggests, and are amoebodd in nature. They are formed in the marrow of long bones, glands and spleen. They are known as the soldiers of. our body and they kill and ingest any germs or bacteris that invade our body through a cut or injury or other- wise. Their ratio to the R.B.Cs. is 1:600.- Unlike the. R.B.Cs. they have a nucleus and can pass in and out of the capillaries and glands. They are commonly known as LEUCOCYTES which are further divided into about 6 kinds according to certain features or charac- teristics they possess,

When leucocytes ingest germs, bacteria or dead cells they are said to exhibit PHAGOCYTOSIS.

PUS formed at the site of injury or wound or sore ta actually the dead leucocytes which have been killed by bacteria or germs in the invasion.
