1. What is digestion and why is it necessary? Explain, as far as you can, how the salivary glands, the stomach and the pancreas help in

Marton L digestion of food in

Digestion is the procesa of intake of food and preparing it for absorption and assimilation through the blood stream from the vill of the intestine in animals or through the water-conducting and food- conducting systems of the plants.

• As in animals, food is taken in to supply materials for growth and maintenance, for replacement or repair of parts, for energy to move, and for producing sex cells.

Plants synthesize the materials they need for life and growtb from simple. chemical substances in the soil and air.

The food therefore must be subjected to physical and chemical enangea, called digestion, before it can be absorbed and used in the body •

The food in solution is then reduced from larger moleculas into smaller ones which can pass into the blood stream by diffusion through the] walls (mucosa) of the intestine and the capillaries in the animal body. Kuch of chemical work is dons later by the enzymes in the digestive track. of 'the animals.

unree pairs of salivary glands are situated in the mouth floor. They secrete a solution of mucin and ptyalin, The water will dissolve any soluble food, and together with the musin lubricales

The the food, helping its passage down the esophagua to the stomach, ptyalin digests the starch to soluble maltose. In many other animals, the saliva has little or no digestive, funétion.

The stomach is a storage organ ano muscular sac. The rhythmic contraction of the stomach will will cause the intake food to mix into paste form before passing into the duodenum. Normally liquid only enters into the stomach and pass-downwarde gradually without allowing to stay in the stomach while the solid food has to stay in the stomach for digestion. There are' enzymes and acid secrated here to help in digeation. The gastrid glands: will seorete hydrochloric acid, pedin and, in young animals renning

The hydrochloric acid acidifies the stomach, contente, stopping the aution of the ptyalin, but enabling the papain and rannin to functior The papain breaks down proteins to peptones and proteases. - The remmin bears the f responsibility to coagulate the milk, been in the stomach for some s time. the food Laat Body temperature, and the fats are melted. trysinogen is a precursor of trypsin which breaks down the proteins into aminoma cdds.

The train is only formed when tryeinogen is mexed with enterokinase which is secreted by the walls of the duodenum.

The pancreaS

also searates horacne, insulin, which regulates the blood sugar in the blood.

All the food taken in is only absorbed in the lower part of the small intestine, the ileum.

2. What is circulation? And try to describe how the blood is circulated

through the heart and through the lungs.

Circulation means the movement of a fluid in a regular or eiranitous course in a animal body.

As in discussion of blood circulation, the cells in the blood especially the erythrocyles, red blood cells must be mentioned to help in explanation of mechanism of blood circulation through the heart and the lungs of a mamma).

The mammal has a double circulation, that is the erythrocytes have to pass the right auricle and right ventricle (one circulation) and left auricle and left ventricle of the neart (another circulation}, During one half of this cycle the arterial blood supplies the body tissues. with oxygen and returns to the right auricle of the heart as venous blood; during the second half the venous blood is re-oxygenated and returned to the left auricle.

The whole passage of this double circulation is as follows

The arterial blood (oxygenated blood) leaves the left ventricle via the aorte of the heart from which arterias, arterioles and capillaries are formed in succession one after the other. Lastly the latter (1.8. the capillaries) joins to form a sinus (a network of capillaries) from which the venous blood (deoxygenated blood) empty Into venules, veine and finally to venee cavuelve, vena cava anterior (superior) or vena cava porterior (inferior) which open into the right auricle. The venous blood then passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle whence it is pumped into the lungs through the pulmonary artery. (The blood has passed through the heart once.} The pulmonary artery, which carries venous blood, branches to form capillaries in the lungs, and these rejoin to form pulmonary vein after the completion of gaseous exchange of the blood in the lungs. The blood, which is now arterial (oxygenated), passes through the pulmonary vein into the left auricle, and on through the mitral valve and the left ventricle into the aorta. (The blood has now passed through the heart twice to complete the circuit). Thus each blood cell passes through the lungs and body alternately.

The movement of blood circulated through the chambers of heart and lunga is entirely affected by the systole and diastole of the heart and lungs as the blood is pumped by the rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the cardiac muscles of the heart,

There are valves between the chambera of the heart whion regulate blood flow in a one-way direction.j
