(a) Treng Kuo-fan was a Chinese scholar during the period of the T'ai P'ing Rebellion and he was the one who had been responsible for th defeat of the rebels, The most important factor among the reasons for the fa- ilure of the T'ai Pring was its ailure to win support of the Chinese scholars. Although the Chinese scholar. officials might have welcomed national Leader rising up against the Manchu dynasty they were shocked by the anti-Confucian ideas of the T'ai P'ings. As the scho= / lars led public opinion in Chine their opposition to the 'ai Ping movement could be considered as the most important cause of decline of the movement. Scholars 11- ke Tseng Kuo-fan and many others organised native armi- es to fight the T'ai Plings and it was these armies wh- ich finally brought about the defeat of the T'ai P'ings.

The rising of the Tonghak Society in 1894 led to the Japan- ese seizure of the Korean queen and the appointment of a regent. A British ship carrying Chinese troops to Ko- rea was sunk by the Japanese. The Korean regent declar ed war on China and China and Japan then declared war on each other. The war, which resulted in an easy vic.... tory for the Japanese, was ended in 1895 by the Treaty a of Shimonoseki, -

The dispute over Korea between Japan and unins gays. Russia the opportunity to interfere. Ever since Russia¬ being defeated in the Crimean War in 1856, she had tur ned her interest towards the east in her quest for an ice-free port rather than Vladivostock. She had built the Trans-Siberian Railway which linked Vladivostock with Moscow, but the former was not ice-free in winter She wished to capture Port Arthur and establish a more. direct route across Manchuria. In order to hide al intentions, she posed as the champion of China st Japan. The defeat of China over the Korean ques resulted China to pay the sum of £30,000,000 as wel to surrender Korea, Port Arthur and the Liao-tung Pan

This policy of Japan gave Russia an excuse to pose as the champion of China. Along with the other Fu ropean powers, she objected to the transfer of Port thur to Japan. It was given back to China. Now Russia's
