1. Explain the importance of the following in rela-

tion to the French Revolution:-

(a

(c)

the Tennis Court Oathi

the Storming of the Bastille,

the Civil Constitution of the Clergy:

(a) the Flight to Varennes.

(a) The Oath of the Tennis Court was carried out by the Third Estate and was the incident before the fall of the Bastille. Before the eve of the Revolu- tion, the Third Estate took the law into its own hands and oroclaimed itself the 'National Workshop'. When the members came to the usual meeting, they fo- und the doors closed against them so they then with- drew to a nearby tennis court and they took the sol- emn oath called 'Oath of the Tennis Court'. They sw- ore that they would never separate until they had gi ven France a constitution. A greater part of the cl- ergy joined it and the King eventually called the de- puties of the three Estates together and declared th at the setting up of the National Assembly was null and void, but he was unsuccessful, he finally agreed to the setting up of the Assembly.

(b) The Fall of the Bastille was a symbol for the end of the Old Regime.`After setting up of the Assem. bly, the nobles realised that something would bave to be done if they were to regain power so they persuad- ed the King to attempt a coup d'etat. He began to ga. ther an army in and around Paris, dismissed Necker 8- nd other Ministers who were against his plan. The pe-, ople were stirred up and attacked the Bastille, a gr- eat prison of Paris and captured it. This prison was of no importance but it was a symbol for the power of the monarch?. Its fall meant the end of the Old Resi- me.

(c) The Civil Constitution of the clergy was the final and most important work of the National Consti- tuent Assembly. This was the first written constitu- tion in Europe. The new government of France was to be a limited monarchy. The king was supposed to have some power. The Constitution showed the influence of America, The Executive and Legislative were separat- ed.

(6) One of the results of the Civil Constitution of the Clergy was the attempt flight of the King fr- on France. Louis XVI was a fervent Catholic. He had been forced to agree to all the acts of the Revolu- tion and when the act by which the revolutionaries made the church a department of State roused up wh "atever courage he had left. He refused to recognise

priests who had taken the oath and decided to attem- pt to fly from the country. He succeeded in reach- Ing

3 Varennes with his family but he was discovered. The Royal Family were brought back prisoners, to the Tuileries.

2. What part did nationalism play in the downfall of Napolean?

Ever since 1807 the power of Napolean had been de-i clining, The reason for his downfall was not just his. defeat at Leipzig in 1813 for there were many other factors at work which led up to this battle.

The causes of the downfall may be described as the weakness of France, ambitions of one man, the Contin- entale system, the naval weakness. the Russian-campaign

and the new spirit of Nationalism. Of all these six factors, the new spirit of nationalism was the most of all.

The French armies of the early years of the Revo- lution brought the new spirit of liberty, equality, and fraternity to other European countries. This spi- rit began to grow and it became stronger when Napol ean had conquered nearly all Europe. The success of the Spaniards increased in other countries. Thus it came to be used against Napolean. National feeling was aroused against France and the French were tired 01 a war which has ceased either to have any connec- tion with the principles of the. Revolution or to br- ing in profit and glory. Thus Nationalism was the ki- es of death to Napolean.

It is paradoxical but true to say that Napolean failed because he was too successful. He was a milit ary dictator, dependent in the last resort upon his success in battle, but each successive conquest did more and more to arouse the spirit which in the end defeated him -- the spirit of nationalism. Moreover the corruoting effect of very great power continuous- ly exercised worked to produce a gradual dete:

on in his character which became more and more evide- nt es time went on.

3. Account for Italy'e failure to achieve unity in 1848 and her success in 1859 61,

Both in 1848 and from 1859 onwarda the leader of the Italian states in their revolt against Austri control was Piedmont. But in 1848-49 the King edmont was Charles Albert who, though a brave was no general and was also of a vacillating c er; in addition, his often quoted remark of 1 11 do it herself was not correct, Italy was ng snough to liberate herself without outsi nd that was one of the reasons why she failed the first period. there were other reasons. under him were undisciplined and not all of loyal the Papal and Neapolitan troops deserte he was faced by the professional Austrian immensely strong fortresses of the Quadrilatera if this was not enough to secure the Italian the French intervened to put the Roman Republ The attempt of 1848-49 was a failure, then glorious one in some respects Austria had proved atrong
