The anhydrous salt is white in colour, but on adding water blue crystals are formed having the composition of CuSO4.5H2O. This change of colour is made use of in testing for water in a chemical laboratory, Copper sulphate penta- hydrate CuSO4.5H20 on heating loses its water of grystallisation and on further heating to 650°- 700°C, the anhydrous copper sulphate de- composes into copper oxide, oxides of sulphur and oxygen. The blue crystallised salt, is afflorescent when the air is fairly dry. Methods of obtaining copper from copper sulphate; Tal By electrolysis of a solution of the sul-

phate, copper is deposited at the cathode. b) By adding a metal higher up in the Electro-

chemical Series such as magnesium, zino or iron, when copper is displaced and thrown down in the solution.
