Separation of Components in Mixtures

The components of mixtures can be separated by phy- sical or by chemical means. When only one of com- ponents of a mixture is wanted, chemical action can be employed to destroy the other, E.g., sulphur may be obtained from a mixture of iron and sulphur by the action of hydrochloric acid, or carbon monoxide from a mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide by the action of caustic soda solution. Physical meana of separation are often used as a simple way of ob- taining both components in a pure state or as a mathoc

of proving that the substance in question is a mixture and not a compound, whose constituents can only be

separated by chemical means. The following table will. serve as a guide to the separation of mixtures. by physical means:
