Chlorine is prepared in the laboratory from con- centrated hydrochloric acid. As hydrogen has to be] removed from the acid and removal of hydrogen is oxidation, an oxidising agent such as manganese dioxide or potassium permanganate must be used. The two main impurities in the chlorine gas prepared by the above method are hydrogen chloride from hydrochloric acid and water vapour. The hy- drogen chloride, being extremely soluble in water) is removed by passing the gas through a washing bottle containing a little water. The solubility- of chlorine in water is not very great, and the water will soon become saturated with chlorine. The water vapour is removed by passing the gas through a second wash-bottle containing concentrated_sul-/ phuric acid.'
Chlorine is mucn aenser than air and can there fore be collected by displacing air upwards. (Mercury can not be used, because it reacts with chlorine; hot water can also be used if the gas is not required dry.)
The gas is identified by its greenish yellow colour, its pungent odour, and its bleaching action on moist litmus paper.
