DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH

There are two ways to relate' what another person has said:

To quote(the exact words of the spcaker›

e.gjora aaid, I am hung

This is Direct Speech. We do not have to change any word used by the 1

Bpeaker, but we have to use the quotation marks to mark off the exact words of

the speaker.

H. To give an account of what the person' bas said,

e.g:John said that he was hungry.

This is Indirect Speech, We have to change some of the words of the speaker) leg. We use the pronoun 'be' instead of pronoun I, and 'son' is ichangerd to was'). We have also to put the coniunction that' before the indirect stutencent.

HULES FOR CHANGING ANY SENTENCEFROM DIRECT-SPEECH TO IN

IRECT. SPEECH

(1) Add "the wonjunction that before che indirect statement.

(2).Simpte Present Tense is changed to Simple Past Tensou.

Examples:
