(a) Standard solution of hydrochloric acid cannot

be prepared by direct weighing as it is very volatile and hard to obtain in a state of high purity. A standard solution of this acid is usuaf- ly made in three steps. First, a solution of the acid of approximate strength or normality is made up. Second, a standard solution of sodium carbon- ate (or exact normality) is prepared. Then in thei last step the acid solution is standardised, by titration against the standard sodium carbonate solution.

The gram-molecular weight of hydrochloric acid ism (1 + 35.5) 36.5 gm. By definition, this is the Game as its gram-equivalent weight. A decinormal (0.1N) solution therefore contains 3.65 grame of the pure acid in one litre of solution. The con- centrated acid as given by the question is about ten times normal, which means there are 365 gramı of the pure acid contained in one litre of solu- tion. The quantity of the concentrated acid re- quired for making one litre of approximately deci-} normal solution can be calculated to be 10 ml.

First step. 10 ml, of the concentrated acid is measured out by means of a small graduated cyl- inder and transferred through a clean funnel into a clean one-litre volumetric flask. The cylinder and the funnel are then washed with distilled water and the washings added to the solution, The acid is finally diluted by adding distilled water to the litre mark and thoroughly mixed by shak- ing. This is an approximately decinormal solution of hydrochloric acid, Second step.

Sodium carbonate has been ̈ found"to be the most suitable subatnce for making a stand- ard solution, because in the first place it can be obtained very pure by heating the bicarbonate of sodium, it is not affected by atmospheric air during weighing, and finally the salt, due to hydrolysis in water, can be treated as an alkali for titration of acids if methyl orange is used as indicator. Pure anhydrous sodium carbonate is first prepared by heating about 5 or 6 grams of sodium bicarbonate in a small porcelain cru- cible with a very low Bunsen flame and stirring the powder at frequent intervals. The tempera- ture of the carbonate shoyld be kept under con- trol around 270°C., otherwise some decomposition may occur. The heating should be continued for about half an hour until a constant weight is reached. Then the crucible with its contents is placed in a desiccator for cooling. Now the so- dium carbonate is ready for weighing.

The gram-equivalent weight of sodium carbonate is, by definition, 53 grams, so a decinormal solution contains

pure sodium carbonate dissolved in 250 ml. of solution. A standard decinormal carbonate sol- ution is prepared by weighing out, on a watch glass, exactly 1.325 grams. and dissolving it in some hot distilled water contained in a beaker. The watch-glass is washed with water, from the wash-bottle and the washings allowed to drop into the beaker. Care must be taken that all the powder is made to dissolve completely by stirring, and if necessary, by warming. Next with the aid of a glass rod and a funnel, the

Again the beaker, the funnel and the glass rod must all be thoroughly washed so that every particle or every drop of the solution is completely transferred into the flask.
