and argued that there should be a place in Hong Kong to commemorate him. Because of those views, I have bravely moved my motion today.
Of course, as pointed out by Mr. Albert LAI, the private life of Bruce Lee (or his cause of death) is matter of controversy. I agree, but I also want to emphasize that the proposed memorial gallery is mainly targetted at paying tribute to his contribution to the film industry. Since Bruce LEE, kungfu films have become a new mode of performance. It is different to old Cantonese films that fantasized combat in an unrealistic presentation. We do not encourage combat, but the fact is, Bruce LEE brought new horizons to kungfu films. It is a point generally recognized in Chinese societies.
The other thing of concern is space in the Film Archive. When I first had the idea, I had the occasion to discuss with officials of the Architectural Services Department. They were asked if there would be sufficient space in the Film Archive for us to set up a memorial gallery and whether the proposal would involve big changes or affect the construction process of the Film Archive. The response I got was that if a decision could be made promptly, the project would not be affected. That is why I have moved today's motion.
I hope Members will look at this from a macro point of view. We know it is not easy to be a perfect man. In honour of someone who contributed so much to the film industry here and recognized internationally, I think we should set up a memorial gallery for him. I ask for support from Members. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
