CHAIRMAN (in Cantonese): Mr. WONG King-cheung, please second the motion.

MR. WONG King-cheung (in Cantonese): I second the motion.

Chairman (in Cantonese): The motion has been moved by Mr. WONG and seconded by another Member. So far I have not received any amendments to the motion. I will invite Members to speak according to the list of names displayed on the screen. May I first call upon Mr. Wong King-cheung to speak.

Mr. Wong King-Cheung (in Cantonese): Mr. Chairman, since the mid-1990s, Hong Kong has produced a number of international champions in sports. They are such sports talents as windsurfer LEE Lai-shan, cyclist WONG Kam-po, bowler HUI Cheung-kwok and disabled athlete CHEUNG Wai-leung. They won honour for both Hong Kong and China. They have remarkable achievements in international sports events and will compete with other world-class players in the world for supremacy in their respective fields.

In the education system in Hong Kong, physical education is an indispensable part. It has also been incorporated into the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination curriculum in recent years. All the students know what physical education is. To tie in with the demand of the community for various sports activities, the UC, with a history of over 100 years, has been building over the years a wide range of sports venues for football, basketball, volleyball, track and field as well as facilities such as cycling parks, golf courses and swimming pools for international events.

Members of this Council and their predecessors have always attached great importance to the development of recreation and sports. Each year, the Council contributed a large sum of money towards organizing these activities. In 1997/98, the Council and the NSAs co-sponsored a number of activities. The funding of the Council was as much as $21 million, $4 million of which was for international events. In 1998/99, the Council contributed $24 million towards the activities organized with the NSAs, $7 million of which was for international activities. The 5th World Wushu Championship received the go-ahead today from members of the Sports and Activities Sub-Committee. It is an annual event organized by the International Wushu Federation which has 77 members all over the world. The event is held in different countries. It was held in Rome of Italy in 1997 and in Hong Kong this year. Similar international events were held in Hong Kong in the past few years. As for the Olympics and the Asian Games, the Council has been sending a lot of representatives to attend the two events. But each time, the delegates from Hong Kong have to fly to overseas countries to participate in these events. As Hong Kong is seeking to compete with other Asian countries for hosting the
