from entering the activities rooms and the children's playrooms in order to prevent transmission of EV71,

The changing rooms and toilets of the PUC venues are also kept clean and are up to the stipulated hygiene standards at all times.

As for PUC beaches, the EPD samples the seawater regularly to ensure that the water quality is up to the stipulated hygiene standards. Besides, posters and information leaflets on EV71 are displayed in all beaches and distributed to the public to draw their attention to sanitation and to alert them to the dangers of the disease. Such posters and leaflets are also displayed at swimming pools, indoor games halls, parks and children's playgrounds to remind people to pay attention to hygiene.

The Department regularly reviews together with the DH the above precautionary measures to ensure their effectiveness in preventing the spread of EV71.

Part 3 of the question is about precautionary measures taken by the Department regarding privately run venues (e.g. swimming pools, indoor children's playrooms, etc.) in the PUC Area. Precautionary measures taken by the Department as recommended by the Working Group in respect of licensed swimming pools, places of public entertainment and places of amusement are similar to those taken by the Council. These measures are:

(i) Reminding the licensees of all private swimming pools to keep the free residual chlorine level at a minimum of 0.5 ppm for pools using ozone as primary disinfectant and 1 ppm for those using chlorine; to test the free residual chlorine content at hourly intervals and to keep proper records for health inspectors' inspection; and to forbid swimmers with lesions/symptoms of skin or communicable diseases from entering the pool.

(ii) Distributing the DH's information leaflets on Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease to operators of swimming pools, places of public entertainment and places of amusement for their attention with copies affixed at conspicuous places, for example, entrances of premises, for users' information. A copy of the leaflet is tabled for Members' information.

(iii) Reminding the management of establishments in which ball pools/kiddie rides are provided to clean the balls in ball pools once daily and the places where children play twice daily with cleansing agent; to clean the entertainment machines and play gear frequently; to clean up immediately places soiled by the children's urine and vomitus; and to forbid children with visible symptoms of cutaneous or communicable diseases from entering the ball pools or play areas.

(iv) Stepping up, as the need arises, inspections to licensed swimming pools and places of public entertainment with ball pools from once monthly and quarterly respectively to at least once fortnightly.
