hope to host qualifying matches. The idea is to make full use of the Council's venues.

I would like to urge the Department for the drawing up of a list of the conditions of our venues. Through such a list, the public will know how many venues we manage are up to international standards. If minor deficiencies lead to certain venues being sub-standard, the Department and the Council should discuss with the relevant organizations for their upgrading even under our present economic low. The idea once again is to make full use of our venues and to see that the venues meet world standards. Hong Kong aspires to be an international city and a world convention centre. At the same time, we aspire to be a world centre for sports competitions.

Mr. Chairman, with the above remarks, I support Mr. WONG's motion.

MR. BENEDICT LEE SHUI-SING (in Cantonese):—I strongly support Mr. WONG's motion. Many of my reasons have been covered by fellow Members. I would just like to add one point for Members' attention and I hope to win more support from Members.

Many major sports activities or competitions or performances in Hong Kong are currently sponsored by cigarette advertisers. As Government is going to amend ordinances, tobacco companies can no longer sponsor such activities. We have noticed that many major sports events sponsored by tobacco companies are popular with the Hong Kong public and tourists from overseas alike. Now that these events have to do without financial support from tobacco companies, we worry that we may lose the opportunity to host them here. I understand that various sports organisations are trying to secure support from other sources and they hope the SAR Government can make up the shortfall of funds so that quality sports events can continue to be held here. Given Mr. WONG's motion, I also hope that fellow Members will give support so that when circumstances arise, the Council will give concessions on venue rental and assistance on other aspects. I look forward to strong support from the Council to the above-mentioned major events. As I have mentioned, such events are of promotional value in tourism. If there is no support from various parties, events traditionally held in Hong Kong may not be able to continue here because of lack of funds. That will be a great pity indeed. Let me remind fellow Members again that we should vow support with the resources we have. I support Mr. WONG's motion. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

Mr. Chiang SAI-CHEONG (in Cantonese):—I fully support the motion. I just have a few simple supplementary remarks to make. Fellow colleagues have mentioned a lot of very good remarks. I just want to say a few words. In fact, from the standpoint of the Council, we should actively vie for more space in holding activities. I hope we can form groups to coordinate with the Tourist Association, Hotels Association, sponsors for sports events etc. Mr. Benedict LEE just pointed out the importance of this. The parties concerned can then
